1800 zetec

I’ve been offered a free 92 XR3i with the 130bhp 16v 1800cc engine that requires a head gasket renewal.
I was thinking that this might make a good replacement for my single carb 1600CVH which was SVA’d and MOT’d last year.
What I need to know is
1) Do I keep the fuel injection and use bike carbs or throttle bodies with MS?
2) Do I fit twin 40/45s with a coil pack and spark ECU?
3) If I use carbs, which looks easier and cheaper, will it pass the emissions test at MOT (if required)?
4) What is the approximate BHP realistically expected with either system?

Although this will be next winter’s project I need to decide quickly as the car is about to go to the scrappy.
Your thoughts would be appreciated as I don’t want to end up paying a fortune for ‘free’ engine upgrade.

The XR2 version of the crossflow only has an engine mounting on one side, you'd need to sort out the other side yourself...

Am I missing something, or have you clicked 'reply' to the wrong post?

He's using a CVH at the moment, changing to a Zetec.

Cheapest way would be to use standard injection / ecu, but you'll have clearance problems.
Next you have twin 40 / 45s but you still need a method of controlling sparks - megajolt fit the bill.
Next cheapest would be bike carbs / Megajolt, but manifold would need fabricating.
Next, bike throttle bodies and megasquirt / emerald / omex etc.
Finally on the expense eide, throttle bodies from Jenvey / Weber and associated ecu.
You could realistically expect up to 165+bhp from top spec. but even from bike carbs etc, you'll be looking at 140+

Marcus

Ps don't discount ZVH conversion - Zetec head on CVH block.

Whether he goes bike TB's or Carbs - he still needs an inlet manifold!

If it was me - and I was starting again -

100% Bike Throttle Bodies and MegaSquirt running EDIS

Can't go far wrong with that.

Total cost

Inlet = £200
TB's = £80
MegaSquirt = £200
MegaSquirt Loom = £60

So £550 fully customisable engine management system

Yup, totally agree, but manifolds for Webers are MUCH cheaper! (well they are on eBay anyhoo)

Marcus

Ps also agree with choice of system.

Marcus - totally agree - but there's some guy on Ebay doing Duratec manifolds for £65.00 for Throttle Bodies - if somebody could convince him to do ZETEC - everybody would be a winner

No, just totally misunderstood the question 'cos I didn't read it properly ;(

Ignore me, it was a bit early in the day for me to be posting

Cheers Mark (CalvinX) - That's what I intend to do - but think I might get it up and running on EDIS first?

We'll see

Should hopefully be starting her up this weekend

Slight edit here: A zvh is a CVH rs turbo head on the stronger, larger capacity zetec bottom end.
