Today I got my bellhousing from yukspeed for my XE engine. I wanted to bolt it to my type 9 gearbox, but came to the conclusion that it is actually to short. It's 150 mm in length, while the original bellhousing is 170 mm in length. My gearbox however came out of a 2 liter Sierra Ghia from 1988.

I always thought that the gearboxes with the long input shaft where only mounted to the sierra's with a V6. So how is it possible that I have a gearbox with longer input shaft?

OK I've just measured my A frame one and the shaft etc etc.
The old cast iron Sierra bellhousing from I'm told a 2 litre is 177mm face to face.
The input shaft length from the face of the gearbox to the front of the spigot shaft is 175mm.
I've dry assembled the units (engine , bell housing and gearbox) and they fit together ok although I have not got a spigot bearing in yet.
Hope this helps you out and by the way the gearbox threads are 12mm by 1.5 pitch (metric fine) I had a bit of bother getting allen bolts locally for this.

Whats the gearbox input shaft length?

From the first 'flat' part of the input shaft sleeve (the part the clutch release bearing slides on) to the tip of the input shaft is

2.0L : 147mm

V6 : 179mm


Input shaft sleeve (flat section)

2.0L : 73mm

V6 : 82mm

Just for reference

billy had to cut some of the end off his V6 input shaft to allow it to go fully into the spigot bearing and sit in the end of the crank (it was bottoming out before the bellhousing and box would bolt up)
