ok my uncle is building another 7 we have a r1 what would be a good ratio diff to look out for ? and what would it come off.... ford please.
3.38 from a 2.3Diesel
If you could get a 3.18 it would be even better but I doubt you'll find or want to try and buy one

Ford Diff Ratios
My 1983 2.0L Ghia had a 3.38

so, the higher the diff ratio, the lower the acceleration, but more speed? or is it the other way around
Correct - but as you're using a bike engine, general concensus seems to be lower ratio is better - as you may find you're doing 80mph and
12000rpm!

Therefore a trip to sweden to find an automatic 2.8 V6 HC EFI.
Prob not many of those in spalding.
Great info though Mr G.
id watch out though as ford seemed to put very random diffs in different sierras, so they may not be the ones shown in the table above. i say this but
USUALLY the 2.3d's have either 3.38 or 3.14. an r1 is best with 3.38, but if you get a 3.14 you can make megabucks on ebay.
Joel
3.14 is too long for an R1. 3.38 is what you are looking for
I want a 3.14
but according to the above table, they're only in 7 1/2"
, so may have to settle for a 3.38.

In my post above I meant 3.14 but obviously had '8' on the brain
It's been mentioned in previous threads but the key to the chart above is the date stamp on the info (87+) regarding descrepancies with pre 87
diffs.
I think you will find 3.14's in the 7" flavour.
As also mentioned don't take the engine bay vin plate diff identification as gospel (some may say even the metal diff tag) I've had first
hand experience of the codes not tallying up to the actual ratio on the car even though it was untouched from the factory.
Cheers
