I have always used the smoothrite hammerite range which comes in a multitude of colours and is reasonably priced.
the smallest tin will easily do a block and have used this for several engine applications over the years.
Obviously read the instructions, but i find a good keying up first with some rough paper and then wipe clean with cellulose thinners really helps.

You can get a tin of engine paint from Halfords - but I believe the 'red' comes out a bit pink!

I use grey floor paint

Blue Hammerite on my crossflow. Looks just the same after 1500 miles.

Blackfriars do a very good metal paint, which is I think called QD90. Very good shine, but a bit slow drying, mine took a good 24 hours. Have a look in my archive at pictures of engine rebuild. Good range of colours, Oh and its cheap. HTH Ray
