Please help, I have a 2 ltr Pinto on a type 9 gearbox, which starter motor do I need.
One from a five speed Pinto engined car?
Peter,
I have one to dispose off. The one that was used on my Pinto before it gave way for the Zetec.
Hmm, that is what I have got.
The starter turns over on the bench and spins in the car but won't turn over the engine, any ideas ? The engine turns over by hand ok.
This happened to me as well. The first time it was because the battery wasn't charged enough, then it happened again with the battery fully
charged, so changed it for a new one and that worked fine.
It could be that it is just knackered.... Not gutsy enough to turn the engine. However I am by no means an expert. I tend to through money at problems
. Buying a new one was the easy was out for me.

Anything from a flat/knacked battery to a bad earth. Check all connections between the +ve and the -ve on the battery first, including the mounted solenoid.
Dont think I have the right one, it doesnt seem to engage, I've mesured the dpth of the flywheel and it looks like the starter is too
short....
Does anyone know what part numbers should be on the label of the starter motor

It could be because it engages to tight with the flywheel.
Try another and see what appens.
There are to my knowledge starters with different length noses and throws.

Thanks Coozer, I think that's exactly my problem - back to the scrap yard again...
Yep, there are two diffenent lengths, been back to the scrapyard and swapped it for the right one, the longer one.
Thanks to everyone who helped me.
