My next gearbox upgrade after the V6 type 9 will be a T5 Cosworth box much better ratios, can take big BHP and you can get them for £300.
Quafe and BGH gearboxes are to die for but at thousands of pounds it's a racers option or an over indulgance IMHO

that quaife box is a flipping bargain, stop dissing the price!!!

I know I can't afford it but the equivalent type 9 from them is over 6 grand!!!

what is it about the Type9 that makes it weak?

Must be an awful lot of it that needs replacing to justify that sort of money!

Well the quote is "80mm shaft centres enabling it to handle over 300bhp with ease" but I'd be guessing about what that means in reality. Of course the trick they've pulled off is stronger and lighter.

Didn't mentioned the actual best bit - the rendering looks just like a flash gordon ray gun

WOW bit much dont you think, imagine if you built your entire car from new parts at those sorta prices, like cheap production cars cost less than twice that, they must be makeing a huge profit

Me and a chap i know (more him than me) designed and had made on a small run basis a 2 speed gearkit to suit the vauxhall F20 fwd gearbox, for use in autograss.

To get 2 driven gears, and a mainshaft made, on a back door basis, cost us £450......................

The expensive type 9 boxes are dog engaged, 6 speed sequential, so yes, they ain't exactly standard.

A basix 5 speed type 9 based dog box is basically £2500 incl vat from any supplier you care to name, and can only handle 275hp, so yes, a totally new, larger shaft centre gearbox is great news, apart from anything else, s/h quaife type 9's will get cheaper!!

Just to put things in perspective, my mate's company use porsche gearboxes in their Ultimas...............

These will handle the 720hp that their current demo car puts out, for "road" use.

When asking him why they don't race an Ultima, one of the more common answers is "gearboxes"

I spoke with a team racing an Ultima in british GT's a few years back. They were a budget team, struggling to make ends meet, so they had scrimped on the gearbox. Apparently they managed to pick up a slightly tired Hewland for ONLY £25,000. The £70K for a new one had put them off that idea. Surprisingly enough, the car was in the pits most of the meeting having the gearbox stripped and rebuilt several times, aparently it was pretty much knackered.

Now no, i think the Quaife box is actually pretty cheap.

anybody daft enough to spend £70k on a hewland needs shooting .

the G50 is very capable gearbox , used in the mosler road car , £12k

they then use hewlands for racing !!

i still think a tremec from real steel is much cheaper than a quaife with maybe worse ratios ..

an Mt75 will cope reputedly with 370 hp .

The work involvd designing and making just one gear, let alone a box full is massive! It's not so bad for large-volume manufacturers who make 1000s/year, but a company like Quaife will produce 10s/year and so need to reap back the development costs.

Here's another option - go and buy a decent PC, some FEA software, a milling machine with the required cutters and indexing table, the bits needed to heat treat the gears, oh yes don't forget a lathe to make the shafts, the materials to actually make the box and then pay yourself £30k a year to do it and see how much money you can make.


The prices do seem high compared to a £50 type 9, but if you have a 260bhp Duratech you're going to get really bored of changing the box very weekend!

well i guess theres several ways to make market products especially when you pretty much have a monopoly, you can either so for low numbers of manufactured goods and have every thing machined to a 'T' and charge high prices or you can have high numbers of manufactured goods and have it machined to a fairly good standard and have a low price for it, also it depends on your production capacity.

yes that is indeed what i was aiming at, guess it just depends on your application for the gearbox, like fitting this gearbox to a pinto or kent powered car would be a waste of money
