Thermostat or not
lsdweb - 2/10/07 at 10:39 PM

Hi All

I'm looking at how to plumb in my 5VY R1 engine and , whilst it's pretty simple, fitting the thermostat causes some real grief.

I've never run a hillclimb / sprint car with a thermostat before and am tempted to do the same again. I have plenty of time to bring the engine up to temperature before it gets diven hard.

Any thoughts?

Sometimes in cold weather the thermostat will never fully open until the engine is 'race hot' so I think it you might struggle to bring it up to a proper temp without one.
If you only go to summer meetings however .....

Is that when the rain's not quite freezing?!

Thanks Razman - I can fit it but I need to fit the adaptor for the capillary gauge before the stat and it just makea the pipe runs very long and ugly! I'll have a think again!

You get the most engine wear when the engines cold and as above on a cold day it'll take ages to get up to temp. Also cam lobe wear is greater when idling than when cruising so don't idle excessively.

Of couse you could get one of those natty 240v water pre-heaters....

Only trouble would be cost and being dependant on a 240v supply...

Well, I've fitted it roughly - picture

It's a bit big and ugly!

Just temporary. I have a box full of hoses which is really useful when trying to work it all out! I'll use black for the final fit!
