Type 9 Bellhousing to Crossflow Engine Bolt Sizes
ironside - 17/10/07 at 03:45 PM

Hi there,

Could someone help me out with bolt sizes (length, width and thread pitch) for bolting the Type 9 bellhousing to a Crossflow engine?

There are two different sizes, I've tried searching here but I couldn't find a complete definitive answer.

4 bolts that are for the holes threaded on the bellhousing side. From searching I believe these are M10 but perhaps not standard thread. I've got some standard M10 bolts but they don't screw in very far.

The remaining 2 bolts (top ones) are for the holes threaded on the engine side. From searching these could be 3/8" UNC? Is that right? What length?

The starter motor ones are going to be different than for the Escort gearbox too aren't they . . .

Thanks a lot,
Simon.

Don't Panic.......
Measure captive holes with a stick, nail, pencil then find bolt that is a few mm shorter any other bolt hole that the bolt sticks out off can be a bit longer.
The starter motor bolts to type 9 will be M10 standard pitch so will the ones that go in the bell housing, I though the Cross flow was metric but if not then find an imperial bolt that fits then source same thread bolts to the length previouselly measured with stick.
I have a tap & die set with a very usefull thread guage.

The crossflow is all UNC - 3/8" in this instance I believe - but wait for confirmation before spending money!

Hi yep All the bellhousing ones are 10mm metric. And the top 2 that go in to the block are UNC.

Cheers Matt

The two on the top which bolt into the block are UNC 3/8" - I had to run a tap into mine just to clear out all teh oil and dust and other turd which had gathered when sitting in the garage for a few years before i could get them in properly.

All the bolts going into the Type 9 are M10.

Thanks a lot for the replies - in case anyone else ends up searching for this in the future sizes I used are:

Top 2: 2x 3/8" UNC x 1.25" long

Other 7: M10 x 40mm long
(4 for the engine and bellhousing and 3 for the starter motor)
