Fiting bike carbs to pinto
b4ldd - 21/9/08 at 01:14 PM

Hi
I want to fit bike carbs to pinto in my indy,

Is it worth it? at the moment it has a downdraft twinchoke webber

What are the best carbs, and which ones not to use.

I was going to make my own manaifold, are the inlets horizontal or at an angle?

Is it easy to convert the carbs and space them?

Does anybody have a set for sale etc

Regards
Charlie

Bogg Brothers
They have quite a good site. You can see how they have done it or buy to save time but not money. I have their R1 set up. Very nice and very pleased. Let me have your email and send you a few pics.
Steve.

no 1 yes well worth fitting
no 2 I have zx9r carbs fitted and there very good carbs to use
don't make your manifold horizontal
Have a look in my photo archives under zx9r / manifold
sorry i don't have any for sale

I did [cos it was easier], and it works fine. If you are good at making stuff or are having one made, at an angle is best though.

Stu yes they will work ok at horizontal but if you make the manifold at a angle it gives you more room for the air filter over the top chassis rail
that's why i said don't make it horizontal

Many bike carbs have angled float bowls, and need to be (ideally) mounted to compensate for this, 45 degrees is common.

Also on a straight (respaced carbs) manifold, the carbs foul the dizzy cap, can be rectified by using a cap with 90degree plugs that come out sideways rather than upwards..

Im making up some pinto manifolds atm, with 45 degree uptilt, straight runners (needs respace)

Im going to set a few of them up complete with carbs 36mm+ and make a plug and play comversion if anyones interested

Would carbs form a ZZ600 (36mm, keihn CVK) be suitable at all?

I have the carbs from a zzr1100 on my pinto indy.i made the angled manifold myself and my mate balanced them today.they have made an amazing difference.
definately worth doing.

Hello guy's

I was stood next to a MK2 Escort last week on a rolling road,it had a lightened and balanced 2.1 pinto with a rally cam fitted.
I was chatting with the owner who said that he had twin 45 webbers fitted and it made 165 bhp at the flywheel but he had to have it tuned every 3 months as it began to run rough and drink fuel.
He decided to give zx9 bike carbs a go with a Bogg bros manifold and he had brought it to the RR to have it tuned and set up properly,he had just started it when i was there watching,a couple of tweeks and it ran as smooth as a modern engine.
Anyway i watched the power run and it made 171 bhp at the wheels!!
The guy was so impressed after taking it for a run down the road he couldnt stop smiling.

From my own experiance i find my 205 gti more ecconomical on bike carbs over the std injection if your not booting it,mine made an extra 32 bhp on the rollers after they were fitted.

I agree they are better at an angle, and I think I'll make a new manifold at some point so mine are like this, but currently on my Zetec it all fits inside the chassis rail.

Yes, great mod. I replaced 38 dgas with ZZR1100 carbs and boggs manifold. Engine is mildly tuned with lightened flywheel, ported injection head and FR32 cam. Made 120bhp at back wheels and lots of smiles.
Megajolt is also good mod.

Manifold - you dont have to get the float bowls horizontal. I had manifold made to suit engine and chassis with no probs at all. Look at boggs site and you will see V8 install - they are way off horizontal.

Boggs come highly recommend. Sound pricey but lot of work goes into them. Although if you are handy no reason why you cant make them. Whichever route you take factor in a RR tune. My car was a lot better soon after fitting but at RR was found to be way too lean. Afterwards there was a lot more smoothly delivered power.

You will need;
Carbs,
Manifold,
throttle cable,
bike pump,
air filter.
Possibly a choke cable (i havent bothered, just lift bonnet if car hasnt run for a while to manually engage it).

Sometimes the dizzy can foul the carbs. Either make manifold so it doesnt or go megajolt. Not many people have had issues with dizzy so you should be OK.

To space or not to space - no great rules here. Dont space and manifold is trickier. Space for easy manifold but spacing and fitting filter is more work. Many people say for optimum power you should space them but i dont fuly agree on a more road orientated car. Might affect flat out power if you are looking for that elusive genuine 200bhp but then you will spend so much getting there that you will either fit FI or a different engine.
