How much difference does a light flywheel make.
I've got my lovely new crate zetec engine, with a nice new - but heavy 2.0 litre flywheel.
How much difference to the feel of the engine and power delivery does the 1.8 lighter flywheel make? Is it a noticeable difference?

Ive just recently fitted a crate 1.8 and decided to treat myself to a a lightened 1.8 flywheel from Dunnell and boy does it pick up well!

High gears not a lot, low gears and liveliness of the engine lots.
I replaced the DMF with heavy clutch total 40lb on my db7 with a smaller diameter cover and lightened flywheel, total 28lb with a lot less mass around
the outside and can now wheel spin on acceleration in 1st and if provoked in second, car squirmy in third.
Before it felt a bit lack lustre even though it was rolling roaded at 385bhp with 370ft/lb torque.

It will also reduce the overall weight of the car which is always a benefit even if it doesn't transform the engine.

A lightweight flywheel is one of the best mods you can make with a few provisos:
Do not go too light, it will make the throttle action very switch like whilst attempting smooth starts and can be a pain especially on hill starts.
Never under any circumstance fit a standard lightened flywheel, they can explode and do costly damage to your car and serious damage to your body.
Considering the cost difference between a new light steel one and a standard cast lightened one I simply cannot understand why people take the
risk.
My Zetec Raceline (I think) one is about 6kg and when combined with a Sierra DOHC clutch gives just about the perfect compromise between feel and pick
up. Had a 5kg steel one on a X-Flow with a standard Escort clutch and that was also fine so a slightly lighter one on a Zetec should be fine (or even
better).
Had a 3kg on on a X-Flow with a AP Racing clutch and although pick up was incredible, starts were a nightmare on the road even with the paddle plate
fitted.
