Buying a single seater..
Hi Guys
I have the opportunity of first refusal on buying a mygale formula ford, something I have wanted to do for a while now.
Without going into detail on specs (which would make me part with my cash very quickly lol) I just wanted to ask a few details first.
I do not want to race in any series, just a few trackdays and public hillclimb events etc. Does anyone here own a formula ford that they use for the
above? I have seen "open wheeled trackdays" advertised - has anyone ever had a go in these events?
Thanks
Shaun

open wheeled trackday sessions are limited so you will be reducing opportunity and access to events. So you need to weigh up the pros and cons, there
are closed wheel single seaters out there.
Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

Hi
What's a 'public hillclimb' as never heard of them?
Track days for single seaters do exist, but not at many locations (Aintree I know of) so you might be a bit restricted.
As for running one of them on a trackday - Yup been there and done that, as not too many years ago you could take them to a normal track day, and it
was great fun.
Compared to most normal road / sports car they're properly quick, especially corner speed as it's basically built for the job. In addition
a formula ford's pretty bullet proof, simple engineering and simple electrics make for a reliable bit of machinery - and a Hewland box is a joy
(as long as you remember it's a different change techique - see their website)
Downside was, it's a preformance getting in and out and you'll need a race suit and driving boots (not much between you and the
mechanicals and little space round your feet) - plus you'll need to fit in - do check before spending your £'s.

Hi
I have driven the car i am looking at, not in anger i might add.
TBH the car has come at the right price but at the wrong time lol. I am contemplating buying it and storing it for a year until I have sold the locost
and have time to do it properly. I just didn't want to waste my money buying it and finding out I can only use it in competion!
The MSA club I am in run some hillclimb events that amateurs can take part in, I probably used the wrong word by saying "public" lol.

If you want it, your best bet would be to do your ARDS test and then do test days. They are much more exciting than trackdays - overtake anywhere.
Also, with a single seater you'll have a much wider range of test days than you will track days. Plus, if you're ever in a position to go
racing, you can.

Would it not be possible to fit cycle wings? Therby making it a closed wheel car and opening up easy access to track days?
No idea if the hubs would take it, but seeing as you seem to have access to it, worth having a looksee I'd guess?

I don't know about the Mygale but I nearly bought a Van Diemen at one stage and the uprights were interchangeable side-to-side so had spare
mounts for calipers that could be used to mount wings. That said, some e.g. Motorsport Events still won't let you on their trackday and
you're still better off testing.
