car HPI check query?

looking at a new (to me) tintop from a private seller

before i even viewed the car he told me he'd had finance on it, which hes just payed off, and has a confirmation letter from santander to say as such.

just HPI checked the car, and its still showing the finance spoke to HPI lady and she said it can take some time for their records to be updated, and they will look into it and get back to me within 5 working days.

the car is priced about avergae for what it is, so i have no reason not to beleive the seller

whats everyones thoughts on this ?

cheers
Ray

just rememeber you have 0 (zero) come back if he hasnt paid it off and you buy it. if he stops paying the finance company can eventually ask the police to help recover the vehicle and you could be pulled at 1am on way home and be car less....

you can ask for clearance from santander and get it in writing yourself if you have a letter from the seller that you are enquiring to buy the car. the bank wont let it go if its not cleared funds.

good luck with the sale and hopefully all will be fine....

Thanks

When I got a settlement price for my car the quote said it would take two weeks to process.

He's probably telling the truth but it's not worth taking risks so your best bet if you want the car is see if he'll hold a deposit for you and actually buy when the finance has all cleared.

As above, if he has tricked you and you give him money for a car a bank owns the car will get seized and if your really unlucky you could even be arrested.

I saw a program about consumer rights a while ago that explained selling cars that are still on finance. Apparently if you know it is still being paid off you have no rights if the finance company come to repossess it but if you didn't know then it's the finance companies problem.
