Thread form is probably ACME.
You can buy 1" ACME taps, but they arent cheap. Be warned though they come in various TPI, one of which is 8tpi.

Ive cut a few leadscrew nuts and could possibly help if not to urgent, but would need the screw to fit it to ideally, so obviously dependent on how
big it is to post.
Im sure there must be a small jobbing engineers that could do it for you locally.
Square thread is a bit easier to do than acme and adequate for light dutys.I think a tap would not be to easy to use in that size and would need to be
started by screwcutting first and just used for final sizing., i did once make a 3/8 x 10 tpi leadscrew and made a tap to suit for the nut but it was
hard work to tap a small nut like that even with a very gradual taper on the tap.

its definately not an acme thread its a square one.
i have asked a few machine shops and they all said "...no thanks mate!"
Really appreciate the offer of help Paulf, maybe we could work something out you're right though i don't fancy posting 4 feet of 1"
diam leadscrew.
I may yet buy a s/h myford when the mortgage comes through just to cut the threads i need. would make repairing my current lather a million times
easier
Its a bit funny when you think about it i need repair the part which would allow me to use the lathe to make the part i need to repair

Liam have you checked to see if there are any local colleges that might let you use there machine shop facilitys?
In some areas there are evening classes where you can use any equipment you need for a couple of hours a night.I used to use our local college years
ago but it is no longer open.
What model is the lathe you require the nut for ? maybe you could find a used part. If it is the leadscrew nut it really needs to be made from Bronze
as brass will have a very short life .
