It lives!!! Hooray!!!

Spent all weekend on the car... getting everything ready for the big key turning moment .... eveything went pretty smoothly, once we remembered to connect up the fuel pump

A temporary problem with the oil pump not wanting to prime..... and then

IT WORKS!!! Lots of sparks, smoke and noise - I want to leave it without an exhaust - it sounds great!!

Thanks for eveyones help on here, often with very dullard questions... just got to build the car up round it now!

Chris

PS anyone know how to set the idle on a standard XE??

There are a few major milestones when building a car:

When it rolls on its wheels and you can sit inside and go broom-broom.

When the engine starts - suddenly it's a real car.

When it's finished and ready for the SVA.

Registration & out on the road for the first time.

Every one of these milestones gave me a great feeling!

Have fun,
David

Its a completely standard XE, no bells or whistles at all. Only internal change is a rebuilt bottom end with ARP conrod bolts. Outside is some powder coat and bead blasted bits.... oh and a 'power cap' so its fits under the bonnet!

see here.... click for a bigger picture.

My car was also fired up for the first time today (with a lot of help from Brian aka BKLOCO!!!! so thanks for that).

Certainly put a smile on my face. Better get the brakes working now I guess.

can you start the engine without having the exhaust on then? what effects would this have on the engine?

It should be controlled by the ecu. There is an idle control valve on the inlet side of the block under the manifold. Is that still there and functioning??
I dont think a standard XE will idle without it and they get full of crap and stick making them idle all over the place..

If u havent even got the exhaust manifold on it i wouldnt worry about idle untill uv got the exhaust sorted.

Engines will run without an exhaust but therel be sparks and flames and no back pressure so may not run very well.

Don't see why not, I did.

You've just got to be careful what you melt with the flames that come out of each port!
I wouldn't suggest doing it for long as you'll go deaf and your neighbours will lynch you! Oh, and do it outside where you won't get carbon monoxide posisoning.

Cheers,
James

Anyone got that
