xflow water pump and timing case gasket

Hiya sorry if this post seems a bit simple but i know very little about the xflow. I'm planing tommorrow to change the gasket for the water pump and timing casing. Does the chain run in oil? and will i have to drain the engine first? never worked on a xflow before.

Thanks Jed

Most of the oil will be in the sump.
Change away!
