Bellhousing gaskets?
I've now got a Rover SD1 V8 engine, manual gearbox, bellhousing and new clutch kit. Got them all seperately, and I'm not sure if there
should be gaskets between the bellhousing and engine/gearbox (I'm new to car engines!).
Do they go together dry without a gasket?
Thanks for any advice.
(Will be at the show in Newark tomorrow to find something to put it all in!!)

No gasket required between bellhousing and engine. Gasket required between bell housing and gearbox.

I thought you only tend to get gaskets where it is critical there is a good seal (oil/water/fuel inside for eg). Bellhousings contain nothing but your
clutch and some air, and tend to have various holes in them anyway - so sealing with a gasket is pointless.
So I'm surprised to hear you need a gasket between the gearbox & bellhousing. Can anyone explain why?

Sorry I will have to correct my original statement (poor memory....... )
The SD1 gearbox has a front cover which has a small gasket.
The bell housing just bolts to the gearbox, with no gasket.
Lots of gearboxes use the bell housings that bolt directly to the open gear casings so need gaskets.

Quantum do a gasket/metal thingy for the Type9 gearbox.
Stops all the shite getting into it...

My type 9 had one before I took the bell housing off. Doesn't seal anything at all. Might have something to do with bolting two cast items
together though?
Especially since there's a metal plate between engine and bell housing.

The reason for a gasket, in some cases, is the mating of dissimilar metals and an attempt to cut down electrolysis.

Type 9's do need a joint (or gasket to you grease monkeys ). The selector shaft can carry oil and it pokes through the casing. And oil out,
means dirt/water in. I used some brown paper for mine. A slight griming of grease on one surface to get it to stick in place.
Some after market B/H's have the selector open and I have seen these with dribbles!
