how much propshaft overlap?

hi all,

i'm in the process of changing to a 4age engine and gearbox.

my problem is the new gearbox won't fit as far back as the old one for various reasons.

I got a propshaft with the package, but with the gearbox in the furthest back position i can, I maybe only get 50% of the splined section in contact. (between the front of the prop and back of the box.

is this acceptable?

if not i got major issues, probably involving a new longer propshaft

another annoyance to add to my list

I would want as much of the spline in contact as possible (allowing for a bit of play if the diff/gearbox moves)

Rather than buying a longer prop could you make/have made a spacer to sit between the prop flange and the diff? Cant imagine it would need to be very long?... Just might be cheaper than a new shaft.

I do it like this –

If you jack the rear of the car up and let the suspension hang down, then check to see if the shaft still has at least a couple of inches of it still inside the gearbox, then jack the suspension back up till its at the bump stops (weight in the car will be needed unless you remove the springs) and check the propshaft has about 10mm before it binds. If that’s all ok then I’d be happy with the propshaft length.
