Well its about time i hear you say
After Mark Chandlers comment the other day about Jag engines being sensitive to air leaks, i decided to pull the inlet apart and inspect
everything.
Two minutes in, i found a small screw missing for the idle valve at the bottom of the manifold.
Put a new one in and put it all back together and she now idles nice and low and smooth 
Thanks to Mark and everyone who helped with this problem 
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

My Golf had an ever so slightly leaky vacuum hose from the inlet manifold to the fuel regulator.
It ran pretty much fine but stumbled occasionally and tickover was always a bit lumpy.
Of course the ECU learnt over time to add a bit of fule to correct for the air, but it wasn't exactly consistent so no amount of self learning
would sort it.
Since I fixed the hose a couple of days back, it idles better than ever and generally runs nicer and smoother.
Air leaks screw everything up.

I dont know where it is. I had to find one in my odds and sods drawer
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

OK, so you are sure it is not lost in the cilinder head somewhere ...

naah, its not in the cylinder head yet ............
give it another week in the inlet before it makes its way into the cylinder head
