Fluctuating oil pressure on XE redtop

I have done nearly 2500 miles in my Luego Velocity which is fitted with a Vauxhall XE. The engine has been faultless in that time until this weekend. On the way to Stoneleigh I noticed that the oil pressure was on 40 for a little while before returning to the normal 80. It became clear to me that it kept changing throughout the trip. It did the same on the way back. I asked a few people at the show about it and was told that it was a pressure valve in the oil pump and that I would need to remove the sumo to do it.

Is this likely to be the cause?
Do I need to remove the sump to replace the part?
What exactly to I need to order?
Is their anybody I can buy from on line?

Cheers
Steve

Sounds like the Releif Vave could be sticking
Sometimes you can just remove the standard one and Polish it and it will be ok
You must check the inside of the housing in the oil pump where it lives though, to check for Scoring

*If* this is your problem, you can source a new standard one from somewhere like Autovaux OR Fit the SBD Nylon conversion one

You Don't have to remove the sump

Oil levels definately OK?

I would have thought that if theres airubbles in there it could do the same

Could apply to overfilled due to a short dipstick (getting airated via crank splashing) as well as a low level or a leak at the pickup pipe where it meets the block (if its the same as a Zetec/CVH setup)

Worth checking, and apologies if you have already ruled this out

Regards
Rob

What perksy said^^^
Mines was going to of the scale before the valve opened then back to 40. Took it out and cleaned/polished it and put it back together ( 45 min job) and now its a steady 80 at running and 40 at idle when warm.
Oh as an aside and sorry for the hijack but do any of you guys have an rpm versus tps ign map I could compare mines with?? std vauxhall with gsxr tps on t/bodies. I feel mines is somewhat lacking.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

Thanks guys for your help. I am sure the oil is at the correct level so I'll remove the valve and go from there now that I know where it is.

Cheers

yep as above

I had one stick (on a customer's car arggh!) the other day, stuck full open, giving 0 oil pressure, damn!!

Got away with it as it happened to be at the customer's usual garage getting an engineers report done (yes it passed with flying colours I hasten to add! ) and they spotted the lack of pressure on the gauge and the light being on and stopped it pronto!

We put a new oil pump on that one to be safe, as it had stuck good and proper
