Zetec with Sierra Gearbox.

I bolted my gearbox to my 2.0l Zetec engine today and I'm not sure its right.
When I took the engine out the Mondeo the starter motor was fitted on the inlet manifold side at the top. When I bolt the sierra gearbox to it the starter would mount on the exhuast side of the engine at the bottom.
Is this right case there is no room for a starter to fit on this side.

What engine black top or silver top ?

Do you mean it wont fit past the sump or wont fit because of the chassis.

If black top and your using the standard sump then you need to chop a lot of the webbing of to get it to fit. Some starters are also chunkier than others. Silver top still needs a bit grinding of.

Do you know that you can not use the mondeo sterter ? you need one from a dohc sierra or a cvh sierra.

I am using a Scholar engines sump and thats a modified silver top sump.

Feel free to pop around and have a look.

Its from a 1998 mondeo and it is a black top. I mean the starter wont fit past the sump. So I guess that will be a lot of grinding.
I have kept the starter from my donor sierra that was a 1.6 pinto so can I use that.
I may take you up on your offer.

You will need to check the throw of the pinion.

My guess is it will be to long and jam. Most use the lucas lrs707 but there was a post from a guy last week who said his wouldnt throw out far enough.

Hows it compare with this one ?

This works in mine.

Seems to be that if you use a standard Zetec flywheel you will need the LRS707 and if you are using a Burton Pinto flywheel you need a LRS543.

Yes you have a lot of grinding to do on the alloy bit of the sump, and I think a little needs taking off the metal lip on the lower part.

Take a look in my archive under engine, theres some pictures of the starter fitted, I use a QS1221 started from QX components.

I best get some new grinding discs then.

I need to shorten the sump as well, is that just the steel bit I modify not the alloy part.

Heres mine, just a few ribs cut off and you can see you needto chop the steel bit level with the bottom of the bellhousing.

Here it is with the bellhousing attached, there's plenty room for the starter (LR707)

Plenty more pics if you need any, u2u me your email.

I have used the pinto starter on my silvertop with a 14mm spacer in between the starter and bellhousing.
No problems to date.
