oil burners

Hi all, been offered a renault master van from my work for silly money and wondered if its worth having.The reason i have my worries is that the engine recently ran away burning its own oil.Is this likely to be a major problem and is it likely to have caused major damage.I don,t know anything about diesels so any advice would be helpfull.

Dunno if its a good deal, but before the merc, i had a 99 master, it was ok, but parts are expensive. (£60 for a door mirror glass) 3 weeks before i was due to get rid, the gearbox went, apparently a common fault on FWD renaults/pugs/fiats etc, cost me a grand to get fixed, the van had 97k on the clock with full history.

old vans are terrible, not usually for the engines, but just for the number of things that go wrong. for example, my recent van isnt actually that old (96N), but it has an oil leak, powersteering fluid leak, coolant leak from the heater matrix, no heater fan, back door hinges rusting off, back door handle inoperative, starter packed in, battery soon after, warped front discs etc...

aside from that, great. It gets parked on a hill, bumped off, windows open even on a cold day, steam pouring out of the windows, cant turn it off even to fuel up... great fun!

so yeah, my advice is get a new one! ideally a merc.

How about less than a grand on an X plate about 120k.Fairly tidy with new tyres.I only wanted it to take my son karting a couple of times a month so i don,t need to buy a box trailer which will cost as much as the van to buy.Its a 2.8 turbo and some one off the forum said they were very fragile engines and even recons are not very succesfull.If anyone else says no go then i will bow to those that know better and leave well alone.

Usually if a diesel engine runs away and runs off its own oil it is completely knackered.In a petrol engine it causes blue smoke but a diesel actually burns the oil producing power and eventually will overun the governor and blow up, if not stopped by stalling it soon enough.
The odds are it is badly worn and on its last legs.

Thats the answer i was looking for.Probably knackered engine and not worth bothering.Ive been advised that a recon fitted is about £2k WOOPS not such a bargain, Thanks one and all Ray...

If it's same as the old master with the linered engine it's simple enough to fix if it's just the bores and rings shot. If you buy a trailer you won't have to tax and test it though.

Hi

i have a w plate vauxhall version with the 2.5 non turbo engine and it ok but recently fan belt tensioner (£90), rear load brake valve(£140) front suspension colapsed and for the small part (£100) this is parts price only. been told by good friend buy merk or transit!
