Book Castor angle

I know there are some whoppers told in the build your own sportscar book as far as the dimensions for certain items go ............

can anyone confirm if the reccommended castor angle of 5.3 degrees is correct - IIRC the wishbone dims and pickup points on the chassis won't achieve that 5.3 figure..... i just need to know if that is the desirable figure or not?

Will be getting out the tape measure and the protractor very soon

I think you'll find that the general feeling amongst most builders who have been on the road for a while is that 'a bit more' than 5.3 degrees would be ideal. Hard to put a figure to it, but I reckon somewhere around 7 degrees would give a better feel and self centring.
May be difficult to achieve though, as with this sort of figure you may find the top wishbone and coilover spring want to occupy the same piece of space....

I believe that the main problem with the book is that its dimensions don't give you 5.3 degrees!

I made my top wishbones so that the centre of the ball joint was 22mm behind the centre of the lower ball joint - whatever the degrees are, it gives decent self-centering without messing up the feel of the steering.

rgds,
David

I offset the top balljoint back 20mm (2nd set of 'bones after discovering book mistake....) I'd prefer a wee bit more self cetering, comes down to personal preferences really.
Your best bet is probably to go for 5 degrees or so 'standard' figure, but try to build in some adjustability, so you can tweak it after if you feel the need.
