swapping out xflow for zetec questions!

Hi guys.

I've got a zetec 105ps on the way to me to swap for my xflow.

I'm going to run the engine in standard form for the moment, then upgrade to throttle bodies or carbs.
I'm trying to make sure I've thought of everything:

As far as I can make out, the main extras I need are

Wiring loom
ECU
EDIS module?
Alternator
starter motor
Standard efi

I'm guessing that I don't necessarily need a water rail to carry to the front as I can use hoses for the moment?

have I missed anything obvious? I'm assuming the standard efi will work?

Cheers.

Ah! Another thing is that the starter motor is to go at the front of the engine apparently... Does this hold any problems?

DV

yes the standard EFI will work whether it will fit under the bonnet is another matter.

It will for me because i am fitting a zetec to a saab 96 whereas if you have a 7 you prob won't get the bonnet down on it!

As far as i am aware the starter motor mounts to the gearbox, though i am not sure for anything other than the gearbox i am using in the saab. but you will need one from a sierra i think, someone will know better than me

if your using an aftermarket ECU you will need an new wiring loom and depending on the ECU you may need an EDIS module

Alternator is dependant on the space i guess you can use the standard one but if it won't fit you can fit smaller ones etc

Vannen,

Do a search. There is loads of useful info on here.

You will need all the bits you have listed and a clutch bearing from a transit.

I am not sure if the Zetec will fit a standard locost but don't think it is much taller than a crossflow.

You will need an ECU to run it. If going with Megasquirt then you can get teh vb921 coil drivers installed to save using Edis.

You will probably need a smaller alternator to fit under your intake system and a bracket to suit.
An exhaust manifold will be needed unless you run the cast manifold and pipe it into your system.
Smaller fan belt is required to run without A/C and power steering. Easily available from Halfrauds.
Engine mountings will be different, but these are easily made.
You will need a return pipe to your fuel tank and a HP pump with filter and swirl tank for the injection. Some folk run the return to teh swirl tank to save a new outlet in the tank.

I think that's about it but you will find the other bits along the way.

Don't forget to budget for hoses wiring, relays etc as these all add to the cost. I managed without a water rail as my engine is far enough forward of the bulkhead. It did cost me around £150 in hoses though to plumb it in. Nice blue silicon ones though

To be honest, I think while you are doing the install it is probably worth doing the TB's and a tubular manifold at the same time. Otherwise you will go through the pain of tuning the MS twice. The manifold and TB's are not a major problem but do take either plenty of money or a little money and plenty of time.

Thanks for the pointers.

The xflow is knackered basically. It was rebuilt something like 7000 miles ago, but over ten years. Was bored slightly to nearly 1.7 and is not unleaded.

If anyone wants it for spares / repairs and has got an engine crane, they're welcome to it, along with the webber downdraught carb and manifold (note I said downdraught, don't get excited!) but I must stress that as far as I'm concerned the engine's knackered!

I'm based in Watford...

depends on what you mean by "much".

I have measured distance from crank centre to top of cam/rocker covers and although I don't have numbers with me, it is in the region of 10-20 cm.

this increase means that in my case I would need bonnet bulge which I don;t wanbt to decide to stick to crossflow.
