is purple a girls colour?
blakep82 - 9/4/08 at 04:53 PM

i quite fancy painting my chassis purple, with my axle and suspention bars being flourescent orange. i know, sounds grim, but would actually look quite good i think

but is purple wrong?

thinking some kind of candy blue with possibly silver for the body. might be too many different non matching colours though...

dave1888 - 9/4/08 at 04:55 PM

Nothing wrong with purple and flourescent orange ya big puff

blakep82 - 9/4/08 at 04:57 PM

oi! answer the question!

zilspeed - 9/4/08 at 04:58 PM

I voted no, but having said that, too many lurid colours in the one place at the one time equals a drift car IMHO.

I do remember there used to be a car I saw regularly in the 80s - one of my favourites, a Vision sports racing car.
Anyway, this had a green round tube chassis, black bodywork and compomotive turbo split rims with green centres. This probably sounds horrible, but in the flesh it was spectacular.

Like this only with green bits.

Which car is it for?? If it's for a pick up I doubt you'll see most of it??

yep, for the truck

zilspeed - 9/4/08 at 05:04 PM

Not the point though is it.

First event you go to, all of the fellow anoraks will be all over every inch of the car. No doubt someone will be like, "Dude, your car has like a purple chassis"

neilj37 - 9/4/08 at 05:41 PM

i suppose it depends on whether it is purple or mauve then it is defo a girls colour

Miks15 - 9/4/08 at 05:44 PM

ye like neil said! depends on the shade of purple, some purple look realli good if matched with the right colours but then u could also have a realli light shade or purple that just looks wrong and girly! get the colour right and it will look good

blakep82 - 9/4/08 at 05:46 PM

god, definitely not mauve lol
though i guess it is a fine line between them. wouldn't want to fall the wrong side of it...

i like it! can you think of any production cars with a good shade. quite fancy getting some (probably just from halfords tomorrow) to have a shot at spraying. I've got a back wing in a reasonable state to practise on

Miks15 - 9/4/08 at 05:55 PM

quick search came up with this

should look good as its quite a dark shade of purple and at some angles you cant even tell its purple! what do you think?

MikeR - 9/4/08 at 05:56 PM

look for BMC black tulip. Its a very dark purple (or it was on my 1973 mini 1000). Loved the colour, very different and was a standard colour in its day.

Mr Whippy - 9/4/08 at 06:04 PM

one of my all time fave hot rods was candy purple, mind boggling it was with a v12 jag engine

iank - 9/4/08 at 06:11 PM

Ooooh! fancy a nice lavender chassis Sir!!! Ooooh!

Paul TigerB6 - 9/4/08 at 06:20 PM

this has got a purple chassis

Tiger B6

Just dont get a helmet to match if you do go for that colour!!!

kb58 - 9/4/08 at 06:21 PM

I say paint it whatever color you like! What's the point of stranger's dictating what your preferences?

Then again when selling it, color becomes more of an issue.

i'm not saying anyone is to dictate my preferences, i just don't want to get an undeserved reputation i see nothing wrong with purple, i even have a purple shirt just wanted opinions

johnston - 9/4/08 at 06:46 PM

Purple well cool in my books. A fella i worked with done his bike frame in "dairy milk" purple it looked rather well..
(far better than the lady pink purple powder coaters done 1st time round)

procomp - 9/4/08 at 06:47 PM

Hi a bit off research will show that ST motorsport had all their latter cars done in a purple colour not sure if the chassis was also purple but i have a feeling it was.

Just found a pic and it shows the chassis/rollcage in purple also. A bit of searching should show some pics off chassis ect. I think there is someone on here building one of the last phoenixs from Ian in the same purple IRC.

Even the trailer was done in purple.

Cheers Matt

mookaloid - 9/4/08 at 06:49 PM

Err yes girly I'm afraid - too many blokes round here in touch with their feminine sides I reckon judging from the voting

However it's your car paint it whatever colour you want - pink if you like

That looks like Lilac to me

minitici - 9/4/08 at 06:51 PM

I quite like purple cars....

But as you see I've no taste at all

blakep82 - 9/4/08 at 06:53 PM

^ yeah, that stuart taylor looks a bit lilac to me... wouldn't go that colour!

as long as i don't get a nickname round town of the purple pounder, or something, then its ok, its just a colour

[Edited on 9/4/08 by blakep82]

procomp - 9/4/08 at 07:01 PM

I suppose it is a bit more of a lilac than a purple .

Thats maybe why all the ST drivers called it purple maybe a bit to far for them to admit to lilac. I note that Tim Grey's new striker fulcrum is blue. Maybe just confirming he is a mans man .

Cheers Matt

RK - 9/4/08 at 10:04 PM

I think it was also the colour of what used to be known as "confirmed bachelors" or those in the
"theatre"... But don't let us decide for you!!!

A-the grip . Girls usually don't get that joke.

blakep82 - 10/4/08 at 08:54 AM

^

does anyone know a paint code for cadbury's purple?

eznfrank - 10/4/08 at 09:04 AM

I think the closest you'll get is the purple Rover Coupe they did in the 90's

blakep82 - 10/4/08 at 09:18 AM

was that the one that went a bit aubergine? kind of like a flip paint? hmm, not sure on that one. vauxhall atlantis blue sometimes looks like it, but is sometimes very blue. its weird...

iank - 10/4/08 at 09:52 AM

I think the Cadbury shade is actually a violet. Best way to get a match is to take a wrapper to a decent auto paint supplier for matching.

RK - 10/4/08 at 12:28 PM

On the other hand...

Renault's new colours are sort of a purple, orange and yellow that looks pretty good against black parts. Best looking car out there I think. Too bad they're so crap.

blakep82 - 10/4/08 at 01:21 PM

just got a ford purple colour to practise spraying, if it looks bad i can always rub it down and spray over it in a different colour lol

blakep82 - 10/4/08 at 04:46 PM

sooooo, bought some paint from halfords to practice spraying. there's no other paints suppliers round here that i know of
asked if it was water based. they said yes. well, its not. it wouldn't mix together and ended up not spraying out very nice. kind of spat out. intermittantly water then paint. now i've got bubbles of water under my paint. not to worry though, it'll have to come back off anyway.

however, i can't clean my gun out and the paint's dried inside the cup (i emptied the paint out the cupa and blew white spirit through so the tubes are clear) what thinners do i need?

edit: cellulose they do cellulose paint... apparently the guy on the paint counter's getting his ass kicked tomorrow

the guy who doesn't work on the paint counter gave me a bottle of cellulose thinner for the inconvenience, for which i called him a legend

[Edited on 10/4/08 by blakep82]

Miks15 - 10/4/08 at 09:45 PM

the colour looks good tho IMO

blakep82 - 10/4/08 at 09:47 PM

cheers mate
i think so too, thats only one coat (its light kinda sky blue underneath) so after a few more coats it should be darker hopefully, and a bit more rich
