Present from DVLA
IainL - 10/10/11 at 04:27 PM

Well after 8 days (and one phone call) my registration details turned up on Saturday (which was also my birthday, great present).

The strange thing was that I brought 6 months road tax, the tax disc shows the value for 6 months and also states 6 months, but the expiry date states september 2012?

Was this an extra birthday present from DVLA?

Oh and the first drive wow what an experenice, just need my new rectifier to arrive and I can go out for a bit longer/further.

Cheers,
IainL

^ +1

After all, it would be a shame to cause someone some extra paperwork eh?

Check online when the tax is due (vehicle enquiry)
If they think it has expired, they WILL fine you.

JoelP - 10/10/11 at 04:57 PM

i believe that the online database will still say 6 months, after all the printer knew what to print, but put it on the wrong blank disc. Hence you will still get a reminder in 6 months.

AndyW - 10/10/11 at 05:28 PM

You paid for 6 months tax, so thats all your taxed for. If you use the vehicle after the 6 months, it will be untaxed, irrelevant of what date the disc shows. Think about it in two ways:
1) You only paid for 6 months so why would you get 12 months worth of tax (despite the expiry date)
2) If you get pulled by the police, try explaining that you knew the disc was wrong and were going to keep quiet and hope you get away with not having tax

I would re-new in 6 months and tell dvla they made a mistake.

Not worth the hassle....

or maybe you have no tax, if it ends on sept2012 and its for six months it should start in april2012, i think ita like joelp sayed, they stuck the wrong blank in the printer!!

stevegough - 10/10/11 at 07:06 PM

I don't agree - if your tax disc clearly states it expires at the end of sept 2012, no court in the land is going to convict you, regardless of how much you paid initially. - Have you done anything wrong if you continue to use it up till the expiry date?

Good luck to you, and take it easy with your new beast until you are used to it.

Send the tax disc back after 5-6 months, and get a refund, and then retax it

myke pocock - 10/10/11 at 07:57 PM

steve m, you have a devious mind. I love it!!!

steve m - 10/10/11 at 08:09 PM

Not wanting to cause an argument, but he paid for 6 months tax, and it IS his responsibility to make sure the "document" i.e the disc is correct. By putting on a public forum that he recognised the mistake and failed to do anything about it, means that probably every court in the land would and will convict.

Note to the OP.

Do the right thing, and if your not sure what that is, speak to DVLA. Do not take advise from me or anyone else who does not fully understand the law.

Looking forward to seeing you out and about in it!

Remember, after the 6 month paid period, you are untaxed, therefore invalidating insurance.

No idea how you came up with that little gem of missinformation...?

Id agree you could play dumb and get away with it, but you'd still get pulled the first time you went past an ANPR police car, and that in itself could waste a lot of time.

mistergrumpy - 10/10/11 at 11:15 PM

You didn't actually brought it rather bought it though and if your tax is invalid then you're open to having your car towed, I'd just declare your hand and ring the DVLA.

No. neither do I. I got it wrong which was a deliberate "mistake" proving that people ask for advice on these matters and listen to lots of different reply's that are factually incorrect. As you will notice, the little gem of information that I did offer was to not listen to all the different answers on here and speak to the DVLA

IainL - 11/10/11 at 11:41 AM

Thanks for all the interesting replies!!!!

I'll be working close to DVLA Bristol next week who issued the TAX disc and I'll pop iin and see what they say.

Cheers,
IainL

Exactly, he paid for 12 months, it's not his fault the DVLA have sent him a reminder 6 months early
