Hi Guys,

On my build, I need to go from a MX5 steering column, to a pillow bearing, to a Escort Mk1 steering rack.

Can anyone let me know what the spline size is for the MX5 column and the Escort Mk1 steering rack?

Also, are there any companies out there that can / would make tailor made steering shafts?

which mx5 colum are you using, this is mine , mx5 1.8 mk2 collum. the top four bolts are standard. the next bit down i unbolted the bracket from the bulkhead and re-bent the bracket as one side was longer than the other to make them the same, i bolted this to my chassis eliminating the need for another bearing, this also means the collapsable part is retained along with the upper shaft. the rack end has a short escort joint with a short shaft sold by rally design. that left me with a gap between the upper and lower shaft around 9 inches which i sleeved with thick wall tube

The escort rack is 9/16 x 36 spline

I expected the mazda column to be a metric size but a 5/8 x 36 spline joint is a perfect fit.
(All of the splines on the Maza column seem to be the same size)

CBS and Rally design sell 9/16 joints, and splined shafts.
A site called Extreme Baja Karts sell 5/8 joints and splined shafts.

I'm in the middle of sorting out my steering column.
I'll post up some pictures over the weekend.

If it wasnt for the new intake manifold, I wouldnt need the bearing but has to be done.

So I need to go from 5/8 x 36 to bearing, bearing to 9/16 x 36

I am also using the Mk 2 mx 5 column. The reason for the bearing is I have to go at about 15 degrees towards the chassis, then along say 150 mm, back 15 degrees to the rack. This is to avoid the inlet manifold.

My column will be mounted twice like yours, the upper and lower part.
