Mk 2 Escort Quick Rack

Evening gents.

Considering getting a 2.4 quick rack for the fury, and before i shell out thought i would try the wealth of locostbuilders to see if anybody has a spare one kicking around they might want to part for reasonable money?

Rally design do a 2.9 turn for about £80 iirc

Ive got a rack, not sure what ratio it is though as its in a box of spares. 25 pounds plus postage? (the standard steel clamps and rubber bushes are there also)

Shorten the stearing arms and put in agressive lock stops... Not done it myself but I understand some have had good success with this.

How quick do you want to go?

If you go for a quick rack just take it steady for a while, as it will feel like a different car, and you will tend to oversteer at first.
Took me a good while to become happy with mine.
I wouldnt swap it now, but do take care, as if the back steps out, you may well over compensate and make things worse.
Take time to learn how different it will have become.

thanks for the replies.

To be honest i am not sure how quick i want to go.

I had assumed 2.4 ,the reason being is that at some point i would like to compete in some autosolo events.

However it is interesting what you say Wilking as i don' want the car to become un drivable as my weekend toy!

dhutch do you have any links to people that have tried your method, would be interested to do some more research on this.

No... The car wil NOT become undriveable on the road.

My point is that a fair few people have an accident when they first drive a Se7en, as they dont handle like your normal factory built car.
We have seen this many times, on this forum.

Well... In my opinion it's a leap from the factory car, to a Se7en, and there there is yet ANOTHER leap, when you fit a Quick rack.

My best mates Son, had a fully tricked out RWD trackday car, all professionally set up and with a quick rack. He nearly killed himself on the first day out.
I have known the lad since birth, and he is a sensible and fairly experienced driver both on and off the track. Rear Wheel Drive and a Quick rack is great fun ONCE you have learned their foibles.

Getting it wrong can be a serious business... I dont want to see that sort of thing happen to anyone.

Again, a Quick rack is fine on the road. Its the drivers understanding and experience that needs to be worked on. You can SO easily over-react with a quick rack, and then get into even more difficulties.

I would NOT swap my quick rack (a 2.4 from Rallydesign) and I drive 99% on the road. Its just that you need to get very used to them. It took me the best part of a year to really get to grips with it. eg wandering all over the lane at 70mph (Just like my old 1970 Landrover used to ), which was scary the first time I went on the open road!
You need the tinyest of adjustments, and the same when the rear steps out. Rule is DONT OVER DO it, and learn exactly how it reacts.

Dont be put off by what I have said, or what happend to my mates son. Just be aware of the issues and concerns and drive acordingly, until you understand how the new setup works. Namely take it easy to start with.

On the flip side, I bought the car without being told it had a quickrack, and having not really counted drove it for nearly a year and did my first autotest before thinking 'i wouldnt mind a quick rack, but I wonder how quick it is is now' and it turned out it was 2.4 turns lock to lock!

Drives a treat. I it is nippier than your average tin top, but then again at 540kilos, with 100+brake and a tiny stearing wheel, I should hope so too.

Your'll want a ball on it as well, assuming your not at lymm where the have a thing about them for some reason, £2.50 of ebay.
