Track suitable type 9 gearbox
se7ensport - 30/3/19 at 08:31 PM

I’m looking for a track suitable gearbox to use with a Duratec.

First gear close to 2.2 ratio.

Ideally sequential, but a well respected all alloy box will also do the job.

Tracsport, Quaife, Elite, etc all considered.

Thanks
Alex

Use an rx8 6 speed only using the 2-6th gears. Full helical, will take 250hp, 250ftlb and rev to 9k and quick shift built in. Same gearbox used in rx8, is200, brz/gt86, mk3 mx5, s14 200sx, all Aisin AZ6. The mx5 box bolt onto the duratec but is at an angle so there is a guy doing adaptor plates for the rx8 that uses standard 1” 24spline ford input shaft /clutch all. Best of all if it goes bang it is only £100-200 to replace.

Ratios -

1st --- 3.760
2nd --- 2.269
3rd --- 1.645
4th --- 1.187
5th --- 1.000
6th --- 0.843
Reverse-- 3.564

So using 2-6th is the same as a quaife hd clubman box but with power higher capacity and fully helical.

You could be up and running for £300 rather than 3k. Assumption is that you can fit it in the tunnel but not much bigger than a type 9.

That’s a bloody cunning option, I’ll look in to the dimensions.

Do you have the details or the link for the adapter plate?

Thanks

RX8 is a bit too chunky for my tunnel.

There are two trusted sources of adapter plates that I know of. Jonathon Hughes and Lee butcher. Both can be found on face book, Jonathon sells his on eBay as well.

I think you will struggle to get a 6spd in a 7. I have seen a 5spd in one. That’s not to say it won’t but the Escort boys have chop the tunnel.

They are both hydraulic clutch but the 6spd can be made cable clutch.

I would also check out retroford. They have developed a very nice mk3 mx5 gearbox conversion. It’s dearer but not daft and more refined.

No body has proved the torque handling capacity of either but both have been ragged well past what your average T9 will do.

My adaptor (Zetec se) was from freddy696969 who sells them on eBay but there is a long thread (or three) on turbosport.

Here’s one, worth scrolling through the first few pages as it start with one conversion and then moves onto another.

Side by side.

On a Puma 1.7 engine.

I've managed to get the 6 speed into my car

Had to modify part of the drivers side chassis, and cut quite a few bits off the gearbox.
And cut a hole onto the bell housing, which I'm currently plating up.

There is alot can be cut off the rear section of the gearbox, this is where its tightest in the seven chassis

Worth contacting OPPOSITELOCK on turbosport forums, he quite often has that type of box come available. I got my tran-x from him.
