Which Coil Pack is Better Performance (ford)
dhutch - 24/6/10 at 12:16 PM

Im sure this has been asked before but ive not found an answer yet.

Ford do two common coils as below.

Currently im using the former, cableties to the cooling hose, with some leads nicked of a zetec and paired down to fit the cvh, dissy still attached to plug the hole.

This works, but im looking to tidy it which is going to envolve a set of new leads (opinions on which welcome) and a bracket to hold it in place of the dissy.

Ive got one of each, the second (that im not using) is lighter and has a flat base (fractional easier to make bracket) but are they simular in terms of performance and reliability.

They are the same in terms of performance, the latter is easier to get different HT leads to fit though.

I certainly wouldn't have the coil mounted to a cooling hose though, you want to keep it as cool as possible or it will fail sooner rather than later.

if you want leads for a 'type A' one try the early 90's 1.3 & 1.6 escort/fiesta

No, well, it was only ment to be a very very temporary bodge just to see if the megajolt worked. But then it did, and that was 18months ago.

found it (eventually) according to PPC mag.....

the zetec coilpacks give the best spark, so you want one from any zetec engine (a proper ford/motorcraft one not a pattern part)

And the prize for most ambiguous info goes to...

I've wondered this before. You would normally assume that the later one would been an improvement but they are slightly cheaper to buy so maybe they changed for cost reasons... Not heard of it as an upgrade so probably nothing in it...

On another note, I've just bought leads for both mine (both types) from http://www.performanceleads.co.uk/contact.asp known locally in Bodmin as http://www.fastlaneauto.co.uk/index.html top service and excellent price. The mundano ones were knackered and the Westfield just deserved a treat

If its any indication, the duratec uses the type b, I have one on mine, totally standard and it manages to whack a spark across a 1mm plug gap with 12psi of boost no problem.....
