Duratec alternator

Has anyone had issues with the standard duratec alternator charging the battery?
The guy doing my electrics said there’s only one wire coming out that’s required (the others are used in the standard ecu so are not required when using an aftermarket ecu. He said it may not charge the battery with using an exciter?wire.

Hi, I just managed to find a pic but dunno how to post pics on here. Here’s the details on the side of the alternator.

That is a smart charge alternator. You need more than one wire to run it. Not to sure about your electrician.

My advice is change it for a smaller, lighter easy to wire unit.

Why not a small 40 amp Denso unit? That is more than enough output for any kit car or race car.

There is no excite wire. It’s fully controlled by the ecu. The ecu puts the light out on the dash. If you unplug it, it will self excite and charge.

As above it’s fords smart charge system. Ford specify a silver calcium battery to with stand higher charging voltages.

Oh and whatever you decide to get don't pay over the odds for it, check with me if you want and I'll let you know what the cost price is.

They are supposed to self excite and charge at 13.8 volts but only about one in a hundred do. It is a crap design.

It’s all down to emissions and manipulating them, ford where at it years before Vag. They cut the charge at specific times to reduce engine load. They also have a clutch to reduce engine braking.

That particular part number doesn't come with a clutch pulley, just the 6 rib fixed one

When you search for a Denso 40A alternator on eBay, the top two items that come up are from the same seller, ones a 2 pin, ones a 3 pin, both are £80 . Are these ok?

A new two pin 40 amp Denso unit with a 6 rib pulley is £66 including VAT and delivery. That’s my cost price if you’re interested.

Hi starterman that's a good price are these genuine denso or pattern? What size pulley do they come with? What's the rev limit range on them?

I got the alternator from starterman last night, top service Mike thank you.
Nice and small unit too, that’ll give me more air space away from the hot exhaust.

I have had the Denso unit from Starterman and is running on my Zetec. Lovely and compact and never had an issue with charging etc. Very easy to wire up.

I’m just about to wire up my new alternator from starterman. The old fiesta st150 unit had three wires to it, the new denso one has only two connectors. I’ve done a resistance check to earth on each connector, one has 0.9 ohms, the other has 9.0 kilo ohms. So I’ve got orange, blue, grey cables, which cable goes where please?

None of the wires from the Duratec plug are any good to you.

They would be a battery voltage monitor ( the red one ) And the other two are the ecu control.

There is more than one rectifier available on a denso and starterman will be able to tell you better.

If it's a single pin then its just 12v to the bulb ( not led ) on your ignition indicator then to the alternator.

Some have a monitor wire to the battery as well.

having just changed one last night and one last year on another car for the same rear bearing issue they don't last very long and cause huge damage to the rear bearing housing
