Ford Racing Puma

Has anybody had one or have any experience of them ?

Just wandered what breaks, or any issues they may have ?

Thanks

Just thought i'd mention how good a car the basic 1.7 puma is! Unsure on the FRP. A good condition one is worth quite a bit and will hold its value.

I've got the standard 1.7VCT engine in my Mojo and it's amazing - it just pulls, and pulls, and pulls.... and pulls....! I don't have any direct experience of the Racing Puma, but I bet it'd be stunningly good fun to drive.

Look out for all the standard stuff with a 'performance' car, and make sure you get all of the keys. Other than that, there's no specific issues that I've heard of?

My understanding is they have trouble at the bottom end unless they are dry sumped.

Also the Puma engine is getting old nowadays and that an Zetec SE would be a better choice.

Got this info from shawspeed.com when I was considering engines - You should have a chat with John there.

I've always liked the Puma and have considered whether a standard Puma could be converted to a FRP boykit and fitted with a tuned Zetec or Duratec.

Potential to end up a little bit Max Power, but that wuldn't bother me.

Had a 1.7 puma for 3 years. Loved the car and engine. The only issue I had was overheating the front brakes when braking hard several times. This overheated and destroyed 2 ABS sensors.

now got a fiesta ST and the 2 lt duratec is so much better. handles better and the breaks are so much better.

Still loved the puma though.

Was your puma an early one? I know the early 1.7 had worst brakes and a friend of mine managed to overheat his quite a bit. I've got a 2001 one and its taken some pretty hard stuff and no overheating yet.

Think this problem was sorted by time the FRP's were made!

I agree the 1.7 Puma was a great car to drive, considering it was FWD and based on a Fiesta. The Zetec-S engine just seems to rev forever.

I know where there is one that's just snapped it's cambelt if you were after a cheap one to fix? It's a regular 1.7 tho, not an FRP.

Racing Puma used Alcon Calipers and 295mm discs up front, so no stopping issues there. More info here

Yeah Puma build and pumaspeed seem to also be the 2 companies to speak to about FRP's

I thought the 1.7 engine in the Puma essentially was a Zetec SE, but with the addition of variable cam timing?

in theory yes, but has different crank sump and head, and vct

bottom ends dont go asmuch as 1.6 se engine, have a winged sump

brakes cost alot to upkeep, stone chip like mad seats wear and steering wheel
