Arument/Rant thread
russbost - 11/11/15 at 10:32 AM

I thought I would see if I can start an argument!

Due to a few recent threads being hi-jacked by people wanting to have a serious dig at each other, I thought perhaps we could have a thread where everyone can do just that & thus save other threads of serious, momentous & world shaking engineering pioneeringness (made up word of the month - anyone want to dispute that!) from getting spoiled!

In future if anyone ever takes something significantly off topic, particularly if demeaning anyone else's engineering/fabrication or whatever prowess then just direct them here where they can dig away to their heart's content

I'll start us off shall I?

CEC vs BEC - durrr! sorry, no argument, my ZZR1400 lump is the best of both worlds it will chunter away at 25mph in 6th gear, has all the torque of any car engine EVER built (yes, that includes the 27 litre Merlin) & yet can be dropped 8 gears to scream away at 23,000 rpm when required & produces nearly 1000 bhp, it will propel the car from 0 -100 in less than 2 seconds - don't believe me - well you are obviously a dickhead then!

I'm off for some popcorn - anyone care to join me!

snapper - 11/11/15 at 10:55 AM

Slow day at the retirement home Russ?

That should start somethin

russbost - 11/11/15 at 11:04 AM

Well, for a start Paul your spelling is atrocious - somethin indeed!!!

In all seriousness I think it's a shame when people can't ask a legitimate Q or make a statement without others taking things way off topic &/or just shooting people down in flames - frequently incorrectly ...................

Sorry had to stop it was 11 o'clock

.............. for no good reason, if you disagree with another point of view there are ways of making a point without being rude & ignorrant purely for the sake of it

prawnabie - 11/11/15 at 11:14 AM

His spellin' is fine; it's his punctuation that's crap, innit?

Terry Pratchett used to reckon that triple exclamation marks was the sign of a diseased mind (an' he should know, seeing as he died of one)!!!

Sorry, that was in bad taste, wasn't it?

Bike engines are for girls, by the way - real men have a Wankel.

oh where are the good old days of watching CalvinX and Hellfire having nothing better to do than slag off each other at every opportunity then Mark having a hissy fit and deleting all his hundreds of posts! Totally insane behaviour really.

Was looking into trolls a few weeks ago and why folk do that and it seems most have some mental health issues or just get pleasure in seeing folk get upset by what they type while they consider themselves to be immune from the consequences, which is probably again a mental health issue and just a few steps away from killing cats or other such behaviour.

What I think is needed is a website purely for trolls to send other trolls hatefull messages at each other while they get off on it. Could call it something like HateFap

I have compiled a list of what I see as common signs on this site for an active troll (I'm on my lunch break with nothing better to) -

1) Has been on the site for a very long time but has surprisingly few posts, even fewer posts that are actually helpful
2) Never seems to be building anything
3) No pictures of what they are building (because they just aren’t)
4) Openly admits they know nothing about car building but still think they have much to teach the rest of us even though we are not remotely interested
5) Fills up threads with huge unrelated posted mostly rambling on about something completely different to the original post subject that they then claim to be a world class expert in even though no one believes any of it
6) Only the trolls actually respond to each other while everyone else continues to discuss the original topic while they fight to have the last comment on the thread.

Ok, so what do you make of 4 exclamation marks then!

I think the troll website has great merit, I reckon you could sell a lot of advertising on there, viagra, cialis, to inflate the ego (?), prozac, valium, to calm irate folks down, could make a fortune

Scathing, but worryingly accurate - not sure I can agree with item 1) tho', some trolls seem to find it necessary to post on almost every subject - including many they know absolutely nothing about, but profess to know everything!

Well I didn't actually mention any names of current trolls as I have not been on here very much due to lots to do at work. I have noticed you left your caps lock on and have a sticky ! key, so you obviously need typing lessons and need to proof check your posts before sending.

Now you're deliberately and vexatiously misquoting me, as usual, Mr Bost.

I said that the late Mr Pratchett suggested it was a sign of a diseased mind. I expressed no opinion on the matter myself. I have brought it to the attention of the Pratchett Estate that you are attributing his intellectual property to others, and I have no doubt that their legal team will be in contact shortly.

ETA: Bugger. No, I did express an opinion on it, didn't I? Ah well.... never let truth and accuracy get in the way of a good arument. I'm sure the lawyers will sort it out.

That said, I have nothing against Duttons, if it gives someone a cheap intro to the kitcar world & stops another Dutton from "becoming" a locost or whatever, where's the harm?

No. We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.

To be honest in a lot of posts some Socretean logic would go a long way. People tend to just repeat their opinion ad nauseam (usually something they've read somewhere on the internet) without actually disproving any other points of view. It just becomes a shouting match usually based on BS.

GeoffT - 11/11/15 at 03:11 PM

Anybody remember 'Considerably' who used to post on here?

Used to wind a few folks up, claiming he owned an expensive Caterham (along with his country estate) and how folks who built their own cars must basically all be chav's....

Was actually quite witty with his comments though, I used to enjoy the banter.

I fully echo Russ's original post, as I mentioned in the one of the offending posts

Personally I spend my time on this fantastic website, to view problems and hints from my colleagues
some I can help with, as I built my own car from scratch, from "The book" and have rebuilt many cars and motorbikes over the years,
so if its scratch build, I may be able to help

Some peoples post on this site defy any reasoning, and self opinionated, and are just to antagonise, and upset

I do believe that the report button should be renamed to Unlike button, for each post, and for us the readers to hit, if we find it
to be against the flow of being constructive, the mods to moderate if someone is being an arse, and if so delete that offending post, plus after having ten posts deleted have there account suspended for a week or more!

It must be easy for a mod to view unlike posts ?

I could go on and on, and copy stuff from Google, and [paste here, but I am not a sad fucker, or a troll
I also don't actually like confrontation, and even more aggressive natured posts or people

why can we not all be nice to one and other ?

steve

jps - 11/11/15 at 04:13 PM

Don't [some] people nowadays use internet forums in the way that they used to use the taproom in the local pub [i.e. to talk nonsense/bully people]? The main difference here being - when you get a bit lippy no-one ACTUALLY gives you a slap round the chops?

It'd be nice if you could somehow block people who you just don't want to hear from - it works OK on Facebook - but in terms of actually stopping it (apart from mods policing it, which will also be fighting the tide) i can't see anything changing in the long run...

EDIT: Oh - and my build progress is so slow I probably hit a few of the bullets on the 'is it a troll list' but I am fairly sure i'm not :0D

Some forums (including Ozclubbies, the Australian equivalent of this one) have a 'like' button, that you can click if you find a post helpful, interesting, or amusing. It then lists on the post the names of the members who have 'liked' the content, and it seems to be a positive encouragement to good and helpful behaviour.

In combination with an 'unlike' button that does the same thing, it would almost be self-moderating, anyway (leaving the post up, so that the 'offender' can see the number of people who consider them an arse), but yes, you could have a trigger after so many 'dislikes' that would get you suspended for a period.

Ozclubbies also has a 'block' function, so you can choose to simply not see content from certain members, too, as per JPS's suggestion.

Probably quite a bit of work for Chris to implement, though.

That as well, probably.

... but you gotta admit, anything with a reputation for spending a lot of time screaming ineffectually whilst not actually getting much work done, in between throwing tantrums and breaking down completely for no reason, is obviously feminine?

So that definitely makes BECs a girl's accessory?

Whereas Wankels just drink a lot, smoke a lot and are difficult to get going on a morning. Male. QED.

Irony - 12/11/15 at 08:51 AM

CEC vs BEC.

Personally I just don't understand why you would put any bike engine in a car. I have had enough of there god awful, whiny, buzzy noises from bikes let alone cars.

Yes your car maybe, lighter, faster, handle like its on rails and be more with cheating Chapmans 'ethos' BUT it sounds like a drunk angry lesbian wasp. My V8 powered car maybe slower, handle worse and have truly terrible MPG but it sounds glorious. It sounds like a stampeding bull elephant.

Oh yes and for all you BEC owners that say 'my BEC is great in traffic, docile around town, it can do anything a CEC can do.' SOD OFF, no it can't do everything a CEC can do. My car will absolutely trash a BEC at tractor pulling. Tie my car to any BEC in the world and we are going ownly one way. My way..........

Assuming my car doesn't break down of course.

I have been wanting to get that off my chest for ages.

"My car will absolutely trash a CEC at tractor pulling" - Yes, it probably will, but my BEC will trash your CEC at tractor pulling! - For a start you will be sitting there spinning your wheels, whilst I with my mid engine will be gripping like fury!

I wonder why we all make so many typos, perhaps that's why arguments start in the first place?

I have over 600mm of rubber sitting on the road at the rear of my car to avoid wheelspin whilst tractor pulling. Besides I reckon your clutch will burn out long long before my heavyweight Land Rover one does.

Wow we can start a new motorsport - Kit Car Tractor pulling <800kg or less

Everyone knows the Fury is front mid-engined although the Fury Menace was mid-engined (if you call sitting next to a bike engine Mid-Engined).

Are we allowed body conversions for my chavvy Range Rover TDV8? Might need a higher class weight limit though.
