I have a Jeep pat and it's the worse car I've ever bought. I'd steer well clear.

You're local to me and out local jeep dealers are useless.

Beware parts are very expensive and in my experience their not very reliable

2006 Cherokee, if this is what the US calls a Liberty, 4 door 3.7 V6? I have a 2008 6 speed manual used in snow country. Only major problem in 4 yrs and 150,000 km was the flywheel which is one of those dual units normally used in diesels, needed replacing at 140,000 km along with clutch and throw out bearing total cost a dealer $1,800 CDN.

The Cherokee has had a good reputation over the years and most are not treated well with off-road use. This is my third one in 12 years, 1993, 1998, 2008.

We also have the 940th frog eye Sprite which most people ask why the hell would you want one of those? It hibernates all winter.

My mate has had a few and he loves them. I would of bought his last one if the timing was better, it was so nice but read the reviews.

His new one failed it's mot on a rear light lens and there wasn't one in the country for sale new and it took the dealer weeks to get one.

He took it in saying it was running rough. They had it ages on a long test and the computer said there was nothing wrong. Took a specialist to sort it, it doesn't like low cetane diesel

spend £500-£1000 on a 90's cherokee 4.0l. (but not a VM diesel!!!)

Drinks fuel (20mpg) so nobody wants them, so hence fantastic value - also the best tow car ive had - super tight turning circle and plenty of grunt.

Check it cools ok, and the transfer box selects, then budget £300 for new rear leafs.

we had one from new 06 to 2013- 110000 miles 2.8 crd and the only thing that went wrong was the ignition barrel.

I have towed freelanders out of fields with it, very capable off road and was very good to tow with, however if you were thinking of towing with it do a search for recalls, basically all KJ's were recalled to check distance between towing bracket and fuel tank, if too close then the towbar was removed and a plate permanently fitted preventing any further option of towing.

Remember fuel consumption is high (24mpg at best), and on an 06 you will be on for in excess of £500 road tax.

Easy to work on and tyres are cheap, never had any rust issues at all, we only got rid of it due to the recall issue.

I've got a 2004 cherokee. I quite like it. I did run low on coolant and crack the head, but that's my fault for not checking levels.

Besides that, the only thing is mention is that part time 4wd isn't great. In normal use its rwd, and tail happy in low grip. In fact, when it's raining, I powerslide out of most junctions.

With the rear lsd though, it is pretty unstoppable offroad. Clearance is not massive at factory spec though.

Jeep Patriots are poor on steering joints rod ends etc but this is easily sorted by replacing the Jeep parts made out of chocolate with Moog or mevotec parts and problem goes away.

Main issue is that the Pat is a stopgap car based upon the Dodge Calibre which is not an off roader.

Most other Jeeps seem OK in my experience.

Should also add, it's not great at speed. I don't take mine over 65. It's unstable, and noisy as hell. Mpg is dreadful.

I am a Grand Cherokee owner but my experience is parts are available s/h or from places like Rock Auto, odd bits are expensive but if you can wait a few days you can source in the USA for much less money. Things like brakes, rads, water pumps are mainstream prices. Generally avoid the dealers, find a good indie or local garage.
Rust is generally not an issue on anything made by Jeep since 99. My brother has LR products & has a skilled welder on speed dial.
I'm lucky in that I have an ex Chrysler tech 10 miles away who charges £50 an hour & knows them inside out.
The comment about them being RWD biased is true but it only happens if you're silly with the throttle.

I bought a 55 plate Cherokee off my mate who bought it new. It was 18 months old when I got it. It had already had a set of new wheels when I got it and then had to have another set as the lacquer was peeling off the new rims too. The build quality was laughable! The entire gear stick came off in my hand when the anti-vibration rubber section came apart. Thankfully, the bolt that held the coupling on was long enough to go right through the rubber bits so it bolted together 'bypassing' the rubber section.
The leather upholstery kept coming undone. The bull-rings under the seats failed allowing the seat material to come off the seat frames. The plastic interior components rattled and squeaked until they all fell off. The rear brakes loved to seize-up and required regular stripping to keep them operating. I had to replace all of the brake pipes for it's first MoT.
I loved the engine though. As said, they are very tail happy in 2wd and with them being so short, you have to be on the ball. Swmbo often ended-up pointing the wrong way. Usually on damp roundabouts, pulling away from junctions, setting off a bit enthusiastically, changing down a bit clumsily.......etc.
In summary:
Cheap build. Cheap. The build quality is terrible. Cheap paint and finish. Plasticy. Cheap interior. Cheap.

Good morning a night at work and all these replies

I think I will steer clear of It, some mixed reviews I want to try and keep my spare pennies for the build not trying to keep road car on the road

a thank you for all you input
