I think you are right to be suspicious... even though it does look a nice car.

the v5 indicates lotus, but as an elan +2s 130/5,
which had been off the radar since about 2009, 'till a new mot late last last year with 210 miles on the clock.

Edit to add,
the wheels look like spitfire mk4/ 1500, we do have to wonder

So its a Lotus Elan, but without a Lotus Elan chassis, body or engine...

No Elan chassis - doesn't IVA say that if you modify the chassis then you have to have an IVA to get a registration number and put a car on the road?

Walk away, no on second thoughts run away!

"Built to replicate the lotus 7 it originated from a donor chassis which was a Lotus Elan. After being dismantled and fitted using a Caterham Chassis the current owner has built out an incredible looking replica using a Mazda 1600 twin cam with 5 speed Mazda gearbox to go along with it and only covering a little over 250 miles this is a great example of a passion project."

So it was built using an Elan Chassis, but the chassis and engine was replaced
It looks as though the only thing that came from the Elan, was a piece of paper

It's got a lovely Lotus chassis plate, except neither the chassis or engine numbers match - I'm suprissed that even got through the MOT, during my MOT the tester checked that the chassis number was correct

the mot only need to check the vin plates for vehicles after aug 1980, (sept 2001 for kit cars)

Apparantly someone pointed out our discussion here!

The VIN number starting with a 78 should mean the car is from 1978, and the chassis plate itself should be a Hethel plate. There is a lot of things not right with the title on the car.

Yep, more holes than a sieve!
The Elan's VIN is 73, so it should still have a Hethel chassis plate
That Cheshunt plate, is the wrong date with the wrong numbers too !!!
