Newbee - first kitcar. 2007 locost being delivered tomorrow :-)
macker85 - 16/11/15 at 06:01 PM

Hi Guys,

Just signed up as this is my first kit car. Locost seven built in 2007 from an 81 cortina. I think its based on the haynes roadster as that manual came with it and there plenty of pics of the build.

2l pinto t9 box, highlift cam, 40 dellorto carbs, Gaz coil overs all round , split m16 calipers with mintex fast road/racing pads and drilled/grooved/vented discs, Twin master cylinders.

Ive had a Z4 3.0se and an MR2s as previous toys but this is a little different. Im a mechanical engineer by trade so pretty handy and plan to strip and rebuild it ready for summer as it needs some TLC.

So first car with carbs and seems to run a little rough (maybe over-fueling) at tick over and what do i need to know about the pinto engine? Also i want some wet weather gear so would appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction as nothing on ebay.

Cheers
Mack

Well Mack I am a self confessed Pinto anorak
There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about the good old Pinto, there are really only 2 types, early Cortina engines which if you can find a buyer sell well in the historic racing fraternity and the later 205 type which in injection form offers better rods and a better flowing head mostly fitted with hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel.
I have some cheap tricks to tune any Pinto to 130 bhp and possibly 150bhp reliably after that the costs mount.
When your ready use the u2u messaging facility and I'll spill the beans

Welcome along

Word of warning,if you drive it now at this time of year be very careful with how much throttle you use

The cars are so light they can bite you very easily on a damp/greasy road.

Damp, car was interesting on track tyres to say the least.

I spun my car on a roundabout 3 weeks ago, as the rear tyres just let go

thankfully did not touch anything!

Yep, last yer on a straight and then it decided at 60mph to go side ways, very lucky.

Is it live axle (escort usually) or independent (Sierra) rear suspension? Live will be Locost and indy' will be Haynes Roadster... unless the builder did his own version/design mod'.

...and yes, be carefull if your not used to light RWD cars.

Hi Macker,
I am sort of new as well. Got almost identical car as you but 2.1L.
When you say the Pinto is rough, do you mean it's not sitting nice at idle revs. If so, it could be the lumpy cam you have fitted. Fast road or race cams prefer to be working up the Rev range.
If the engine is rough while driving that's different. Could be timing needing slight adjustment, carbs need set up or fine tuned or electrical issue between dizzy and plugs.
Hope you find the problem.

Yeah that's about the speed mine tries to put me threw the hedge on a wet road!

Mine does the same at 60 on wet roads,

Got to admit the BEC a lot quicker than the cross flow and bites a lot but easier to get back and control.
40 ish sideways past a transit lol
