and he didnt even try to hide the fact it,s a ringer ?

It hasn't been taxed since 1986 - and he drove it from Christchurch to Bristol and back.

Sam_68 - 30/7/18 at 06:49 PM

It's down as a Lotus Elan.

Which with the value of good Elans at the moment means that, ironically, it might be worth it just for the chassis plate as the basis of a 'restoration'.

Taxed as a VHI, and so no MoT required? that is what I reckon. So very naughty...

This car sold for £2K on ebay in April and was discussed at length on FB. Many people thought it could be legit or that if the buyer got caught out then it was their fault alone.
How would the buyer insure the car? It'll come up on the insurers screen as an Elan.

Naughty or stupid? Either way just dropped them a message-

Hi, You can't just stick the plates off a 1968 Lotus Elan onto a kit car I'm afraid. It's called a ringer, it's highly illegal and could result in the vehicle been taken from you and crushed, which would be a shame. You may well already know this?

SPYDER - 31/7/18 at 12:42 PM

The car was reported to ebay last time but they seem not to give a damn. If they were liable then they might take things more seriously.
On a related note, if an incorrectly registered x-flow Locost is for sale at £5K then many of us ought to be upping our Agreed Value policies.
Is it just me, or are prices on the up?

Had a look on the link to the above and found a nice LOTUS 7 TRIBUTE 1963........£19,750. It looks like a really nicely put together example , but if you search the MOT history it is in fact a LOTUS ELAN....1588cc......this is for sale at a dealers , who has some interesting cars for sale. Vehicle tax check also shows 1991 Lotus Elan.....so I am guessing that is also on the log sheet ??

SPYDER - 31/7/18 at 07:18 PM

^^^^^^^^^ The recorded mileage drops from 118K to 403 miles in 2017. That is when the ID transfer took place. The original Elan was an M100 front wheel drive type. The MOT history shows numerous faults which may have rendered it uneconomical to keep going. Or it may have been in an accident. Who knows. Its an out and out fraud.

if the garage issued an MOT to such a blatantly incorrect vehicle? -

linky

I’d love that job. I think I’m pretty handy at spotting a ringer.

What you all think the punishment should be ?

In the case of deliberate kit car ringing. Crusher. ?
In the case of unwitting recent purchase. Support to help correctly register. ?

slingshot2000 - 1/8/18 at 04:37 PM

Yes, I would go with the crusher for the deliberate, illegal ringing and assistance for the innocent if proven.

nero1701 - 1/8/18 at 04:41 PM

Or possibly reimbursement from the original ringer to the recent purchaser plus costs.
