Has anyone found a phone mount that works in their Locost (or similar vehicle)?

I don't want it to attach to the windscreen and I do want it visible so I can use it for directions.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

Purchased or home made?

How does your dashboard look?

Could you make something from wood or Ally (maybe painted black) for your phone to slot into?

Have you got a power source / USB point to keep your phone charged?

I started out thinking I'd make my own but I was hoping someone had found a cheap 'Amazon' deal for a useable device

I do have a USB charge point in the centre console so that's all good

Cheapo version - a couple of corner brackets that self adhere anywhere you want (eg on the dash). Fine for road use

I made my own using an offcut from the floor, see the process in link below. Very pleased with it.

Slater: that's very cool

I may end up doing something very similar

However I intend to hold out a bit longer and search a little bit more before heading to the garage to cuss and swear at some Aluminium

I went locost and just cable/tied (actually, now velcro wrap) an ebay rubber phone case to my dash. just swap the phone from the daily case to this when going for a drive. The USB charging cable helps retain it but it's a snug fit anyway.


Phone Holder

I generally use a magnet air vent mount in my tintop, this works really well for me so I'm planning to do the same in my kit after IVA. Though rather than the air vent bit I will bolt it straight to the dash. It needs to be a decent brand though, the cheap ones will send your phone into a footwell after the first bump.

I did use a cheap phone holder but found the suction cup not to be reliable on surface of the dash or tunnel. I swapped out the cup for a spring clamp that I could fit onto the bottom edge of the dash. Both versions were a compromise on position and vibration was also an issue.

In the end I got a QuadLock mount that fitted to the dash and that's been great. (I already had the phone case as I use their bike mounts). They do a variety of different mounts. As well as the car ones look at the offroad, marine and "build your own" versions.

Generic phone holders all seem to use the same standard ball size.

I took my favourite generic phone holder then made a "thing" by 3d printing the ball and a mounting. My thing then reuses the screw holes on the caterham dash top that have poppers for a tonnau cover (that i never use). Phone is then just above the water temp and oil pressure gauges but not covering them and not covering the screen.

Only downside - i've not got round to printing in something 'decent' and PLA keeps failing every 12 months - when its REALLY hot.

GUB phone mount works well you can fix it flush onto the dash

I don't think there is enough of a radius on the front edges, I'll see how close I can get it to the steering wheel.

Not an option really, I have about a 2 hour drive to my nearest test centre (depending on traffic). The last thing I want to is to be late for my test because I got lost or there was an avoidable queue that I decided to sit in because I didn't know any better. It will stressful enough without getting lost / late as well! I will need a phone holder of some sort.

Get one that sticks to your windscreen and remove or grips a handlebar and stick to the bottom of your dash (and remove)

Yes, I am coming round to that idea too, only option if they don't comply. It needs my dash to be nice and smooth though!
