Looking for a roof box recommendation
iank - 27/6/09 at 07:43 AM

I want/need a half width box to go on an 06 Mondeo with Ford roof bars.

Needs to be reasonable quality, sturdy but cheap.

Any brands I should be looking out for, and any good places to buy from?

Any thoughts on this one?

Thule stuff is pretty good. How about something like...

If that doesn't suit, have a trawl around that site. Prices seem ok and free delivery. I have never used it but I have used one of the sister sites trailerpartswarehouse and have been impressed with selection, price, service, delivery etc.

I only really know of thule and halfords. both are built although the thule can be opened from either side. The fittings differ though; thule has permanently fixed clamps that take a minute to attach. Halfords have u clamps and are a tad fiddly but if you arent taking it off every weekend and have access to a step ladder id take that one.

The halfords one in your post is the one we have, fitted to our focus mk3 with ford roof bars.

Had id for a couple of years now and its very good, very sturdy and swallows up loads of stuff like the kiddies pushchair and anything that wont fit in the boot.

I think this halfords range is an copy of the older thule ones, the fittings and quality is very good compared to the more expensive ones.

Mine has quick release clamps so only takes a few mins to fit and remove.

I don't know about the boxes, but I have Halfords' roof bars and parts of them actually have Thule's logo and company details moulded in.

We have a Halfords one we use on SWMBOs Verso. Its the mahoosive one (570 litres I think). Got it for £90 cos it was the one on display - can't remember how much it would have been "out of the box".

It did have a few marks on it but they paled into insignificance when SWMBO tw@tted it several times in a multi story car park . Survived that pretty well so they are quite sturdy.

They take up a lot of storage space when they are not on the car though.

If space off the car is an issue, how about one of these...

Are you still working in Cambridge? if so I may be able to help with the loan of roof bars and roof box.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm now full time in Newcastle (they offered me too much cash as a "resigning bonus". Got the roof bars coming as part of the deal on the car.

The Thule Pacific 500 looks just the job.
