Cant remove reg number
rallyingden - 25/9/09 at 03:10 PM

I've just found out that if a cars MOT has expired for more than 12 months you cannot transfer the number off the car either onto another or onto retention.

You have to MOT and TAX the car so that you can then transfer it.

So if you have a barn find with a cool number, remember its not worth anything unless the car can be made good enough to MOT & TAX.

I bet if you scrap it the DVLA put the number up for sale

As far as i am aware it has been like that since at least the 70s, as a friend of mine used to buy up old motor bikes for there reg no and had to get them road worthy MOT'd / Taxed etc before he could tranfer or sell them on to a buyer for transfer.

there are ways around this loophole, and a friend and i did it years ago,

Only works on cars that dont have their VIn stamped into the chassis

I had a car with a private number on which was crashed into. The person who hit it just gave us the money and I put the car in a barn. I got the number off 3 years later but had to take it to my local (local being 2 hours away) DVLA office for an inspection.

I was told i needed a vic check to transfer my no as my car has been off the road longer than six months havent actually done it yet though but its worth checking
