Speed Limit

A fellow poster on Jag-lovers posted this:

There are some changes afoot in the UK with regards speed
enforecement, with more variable speed limits (with lower
tolerances than today) and the swap out of all ''film based'' cameras
to ''digital'', which means a virtually infinate number of pictures,
rather than stopping when the film ran out.

My sources tell me that the M25 and M42 will be updated first by
the 15th February, with some new ones going in on the M6 between
Birmingham and Manchester, and later on the M1.

If I recall correctly, the threshold for trigger for 70mph limits
will be 79mph.

But don't forget they only trigger when the variable speed limit signs are on (including the national limit symbol).

yeaahh i did the m42 round brum at the weekend,

theres these goal things you go through every 600m or so, the road angel was going mental!

David Jenkins - 12/2/08 at 08:03 PM

Could be worse - I was told that in Australia there's zero tolerance, i.e. if you're doing 31 in a 30 zone you get a ticket.

Also, you get double penalty points on weekends and holidays.

Disclaimer: I was told this, I have no personal experience, but the person who told me was an Aussie!

I've heard that some cameras are set at 68mph to catch wagons that are speeding so can also collect all the cars( stealth tax) !!!!!!

Great Idea more speed cameras on motorways. I cant see and problem with panic braking on a busy motorway!

Or looking at the speedo more than you watch the road

Confused but excited. - 12/2/08 at 09:04 PM

It would seem that the '10% + 3mph' is out of the window already.
My mate was done for speeding this morning, by plod with a laser.
He was clocked at 46 in a 40 limit.
Three points plus £60 fine.
He is not a happy bunny.

tom_loughlin - 12/2/08 at 09:30 PM

10% plus 2 has been got rid of a long time ago!
I got done for doing 32 in a 30 zone by a scam van (but escaped by going on a speed awareness course where I admitted how dangerous my driving was, and now realise that this kind of 'spirited' driving is reckless.
Will never do anything of the sort again!

Absolute nutsack if you ask me.

Oh look, lots of effort being expended on extracting money from the motorist, what a huge surprise!

Speed cameras simply don't acheive a worthwhile or even significant improvement on road safety, despite the best attempts to lie and bluff on the stats by the Camera Pratnerships. This is purely about making life difficult for the motorist, and gaining employment for a lot people without having to pay for it.

"Tough on crime"? Haha, one of the larger pork pies to fall from Tony B.Liars lips. as hell isn't what they say they are doing.

itiejim - 12/2/08 at 10:33 PM

The 10% plus 2 does still apply, though as always it is advisory by the Association of Chief Police Officers - ie if a particular police force doesn't want to play ball they don't have to

mistergrumpy - 12/2/08 at 11:14 PM

I believe the Gatso's within Greater Manchester are set higher, possibly 10%+2 but I know that within the Lancs. force they tend to be set bang on. They have no tolerance to nowt. Probably why they come out top Police Force in England and Wales again.

Why do i keep dreaming about an LCD numberplate - james bond style .........................................

johnemms - 12/2/08 at 11:20 PM

Some dude put sensors in his numberplate that reacted to the cam flash and instantly turned on halogen lights on the plate to overexpose it....

never found out if it worked out or not but sounded like a locost solution ... lol .. nite all

02GF74 - 13/2/08 at 10:05 AM

firstly there is no way his electronics can respond to tun on the lamps in the time it takes the flash to bounce back to the camer (but may make a differnce if the the exposure time on the camera is high).

Aren't there two photos taken in a set interval from wchih speed can be derived? If so the second photo can be over exposed perhaps.

But why bother - use hairspray or that other spray stuff they sell at shows.

I know of one disenfranchised driver who regularly drove back and forward in a circuit through a sequence of cameras to make them go off. The tool to prevent detection was using a series of slave camera flash guns. These go off instantly to aid photography so respond instantly to camera flash!

If the M42 is anything to go by then i for one are in favour of the active management stretches on the motorways. Ive been along there in some heavy traffic and never once caught in a jam. I think the slowest ive done is 40, and that is far better than what happens on parts of the M1. To me this is how speed cameras should be used, ie to control congested roads at peak times.
