Duratec Engine ID Problem!
andylancaster3000 - 12/2/10 at 10:49 AM

Could do with peoples thoughts on this little problem. We've just bought an engine from this advert on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200437272707&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Fair few miles but for that money maybe its worth a shot.

Now everything led us to believe is was a duratec. Year of mondeo and engine code when asked (CJBA/B). However, when we got the invoice a little not on the bottom said:

Just to let you know this is definately a Zetec engine.

The engine is being delivered, what are we going to find?!

Cheers
Andy

IRC there were 3 phases of zetec engine.

Phase 1 = zeta (early mondeos)
Phase 2 = Zetec silver top
Phase 3 = Zetec Black Top (more correctly called Duratec.)

Just because it says Zetec on the invoice doesn't mean it's not a Duratec. Wait till it arrives. When it arrives you should find it's the black top zetec/duratec engine.

Always happy to be corrected thou.

If the engine code is CBJA or CJBB then it will be a proper duratec.

If its not then it will be a zetec. 2001 is the year the 2 litre was changed from zetec to duratec....

The phase 3 blacktop is a Zetec, not a duratec.

Correct, but to add confusion Ford branded the Zetec engines fitted to the ST170 engines as "Duratec ". And of course they also used "Zetec" as a trim level. They have created a lot of confusion with this silliness.

a good way to tell the difference is all the zetec engines have a timing belt including the zetec st170 where as the duratec is a timing chain.

The biggest give away is that the zetec is cast iron block and the duratec is aluminium

thanks guys...

Yep, I had come to the conclusion it was a duratec and the zetec bit just refered to the mondeo trim level. If everything he has said is correct (ignoring the last quote on the invoice) then I believe ( and hope too!) a duratec will turn up, however it does concern me that this appranetly experienced breaker has got it wrong.

Were any 2l zetec engined mondeos made in this year and is that engine code unique to the duratec engine?

flak monkey - 12/2/10 at 12:35 PM

The CJBA/CJBB code is unique to the duratec I believe.

2001 was the transition year, if its come from a 2 litre mk3 mondeo then it will be a duratec.

Thought it probably would be. So assuming he's not telling porkies then the right one will turn up.

Was 2001 the mk2-3 change over or 2000? Everything I can find says 2000?

For example:

or the inlet and exhaust being on the other sides
