Hi guys, iv basically had to organise a new propshaft etc after my old one failed, anyway after putting everything back together but without the inside panels on it so I can have a look, I noticed when I put my car in gear and almost using the geartsick as lever to deliberately move the gearbox around to check how much movement is in it. It's quite soft so to speak, with not too much force I can almost lift the gearbox up and down etc just with the geartsick. Now the geartsick has been modified by bringing it forward so it's attached to an extension piece and a ball joint (which all works well) but I'm just a little worried that the gearbox mounting is too soft? What should they be like, and should I upgrade it if possible or replace it? The standard rubber one by the looks of it.

Type 9 sierra gearbox mounts are extremely soft, luckily an alternative mount can be purchased.
The harder mount is much harder rubber and a little different in width, it may also need a little refit to the original chassis area.

Cheers for that, is that the thing that people often change over too then, does it have any effect on the car itself?

My Sierra gear box mount had the gear stick going up & down maybe 2" over bumps...
Took it out modded it to 'firm' .. no problems .. very nice

as above the old 4 speed style mounts are the ones you want, they were used on Cortina's, Escorts etc... but are also the standard mounts for Caterham and Westfield too (Caterham actually sell them for £13+VAT, but the website says out of stock just now )

any of this style will be a massive improvement on the sierra style mount (even the standard/non-copetition versions of the older mount) - they a lot stiffer, but also a little smaller and slightly taller (just a few mm) so you'll need to rework the brackets it bolts onto a little

I cut all the rubber out of mine ..
made a metal cradle ..
put some 5mm silicon rubber sheet for isolation ..
