Help me dismantle my Sierra steering please
bumpy - 18/7/14 at 02:15 PM

I need to separate the tie bar end from the steering rack.

The Haynes book suggests a pipe wrench, but it doesn't want to budge.

Although the Haynes book doesn't mention it, it looks like the part has been dressed over into a slot.

Can anyone give me advice on how to proceed?

I will try and get some pictures up. Nothing works

Theyre very tight
I use good quality stilsons
Failing that can you carefully grind two flats on it so you can use a spanner

Thanks for that. I guess I should relieve that burred-over bit first.

I have some big Stilsons, but the Haynes book shows the job being done in a vice. If I do it on the car, could I damage the steering rack with all that leverage?

The book only says 50 ft lbs, so perhaps they have Loctite on them.

The only way to be sure of no damage is to remove it and put it in a vice. I also tried to undo mine without removing rack. The sensible conclusion is to remove it. Seemed to undo quite easily once in a vice and the turning force is concentrated just on the joint.

Or get someone with another pair of grips to hold the rack while you undo the track rod
