What if any is there a direct replacement either Zetec or Duratec to bolt straight on to my gearbox.
Yep a zetec will bolt on. A duratec, zetec se, Vauxhall xe will also bolt on with a new bell housing if your box is a type 9 ?
All down to how much you want to spend ?
In my opinion, ST170 with Chestersportscars bike carb set up will be the best bang:£:hassle ratio.
Even cheaper is the 2.0l blacktop again with the Chester bike carb setup but not as much performance.
Duratec as said before needs a £250+ bell housing and is quite tall.
Make sure you check your diff/brakes are up to the job as you will be adding 50%+ more power and a load of torque.

I've got a Blacktop Zetec on bike carbs and it is an easy installation.
It's the induction, ignition and exhaust that cost though.
If on a budget Big_Wasa has a great guide to running a Zetec on OEM efi and ecu. If I was doing it again that's what I would probably do.

If not. Stick a fuel injected R1 in it. There's one for sale for £750 on here which is not bad!

Alternatively - do think hard about going the bike engine route. It will give you a very broad grin, for not a lot of work or money (relatively
speaking). If there's an injection R1 on here somewhere, that would be ideal (very reliable, etc.).
Go on, do it, you'll never look back.
I've installed a puma engine into my Sylva J15. They are VERY compact and light. Mine is bog standard apart from throttle bodies and an omex ecu,
and currently sits at 156bhp.
Forgetting the power, the lightness is a real bonus for our light kit cars. Also, these engines seem to be pretty cheap
Anyway, just another option...you would of course need to the bellhousing (same as the 1.6 sigma engine).

I'm betwixt and between on choices for my Striker.
I have a 1.7 Puma sat in my driveway ready to donate it's beating heart... but... and I can't believe I'm contemplating this...
there's a nice R1 package available just now. The Striker is probably light enough to do the BEC route justice.
I can probably get the Sigma engine to R1 bhp levels, but the car will be 65-70kg heavier with it and a Type 9 / bell housing.
That said, the CEC would have 30 ft/lbs of torque more.
Can anyone take an educated guess at how that would translate performance wise (similar bhp, 70kg heavier car, but 30 ft/lbs more torque).?
I guess you really have to think what sort of car you want.....The two engines you mention would give completly different driving characteristics.
No doubt on track the R1 is going to have the legs. On road the 1.7 is probably going to be a good option. Ill be honest and say I liked the idea of
the puma engine as it sort of offered a half way house between a CEC and a BEC. OK, that may be pushing it a bit, but they like to rev and really do
weigh bog all for a CEC. Similar to the ethos of using a k series.........

Got ot agree with Jenko on this one - the Puma Engine either in 1.6 or 1.7 VCT format is a great halfwayhouse.
With ARP bolts and uprated valve springs it will rev to 8k all day and, as jenko has proved, with TB's, omex (with off/on/off VCT control) and an
exhaust 156bhp + decent torque is very possible. Add a cam and you are up to 175hp (maybe a bit more), all with stock internals and if it all goes
bang another engine is £200. (You do get a reverse gear for that which you have to add in for the bike engine for the road/IVA).
I have the same engine going in a Ford Anglia and have put the engine, ancilliaries, exhaust manifold, ally belhousing, and type 9 on the scales and
it all weighs less than 150kg. There are ally cases for the Type 9 but they are expensive.
Have a look at this one recently sold on ebay for inspiration - Sylva Striker (Raw or Stuart Taylor but not Caterham or
Westfield)
(note the very expensive sequential gearbox !)
A 1.8 turbo from a Audi TT or Leon cupra...
225bhp standard, stage one chip gets them up to 270.... Forged internals as standard...
Anyone know of way to getting this engine rwd?
