Just been out to weigh my 6 speed RX8 -

the ford cast 5 speed
Type 9 gearbox without bell housing - 31.5kg
Ally bell housing for duratec/Zetec, xE - 4.5kg

RX8 6 speed box (includes bell housing and clutch fork etc.) - 46.5k, wow thats heavy carn`t belive the alloy rx8 box weighs as much as that, so thats that project out of the window

The 5 speed mx5 box is much lighter....

I weighed a 5 speed on friday at labtop robs place 46kg , but its a cheap close ratio gearbox cheaper than a type 9 tran x or quaife , same input and drive shaft splines ,

But if you have to add more weight it is in the best place, low down right in the centre of the car.

good point well made

They are heavy buggers. Did it have oil in it? I weighed one years ago and was sure it was in the 50's (was full of oil).

Guess the necessary adapter plate will add a few kilos too...

Like others have said - cheap close ratio (1st gear would pretty much be redundant though).

all gearboxs were bone dry no oil at all,i was hoping that the rx8 box was going to be light.

Heavy but v cheap and plentiful. Prob not much use to you but the bmw getrag box I used in my GKD was very light. E36 318is.

Hmm, I read up on PCC about the box and for want I remember the 6 speeder has a lot heavy due to the extra cogs and bigger case....

I'm going to weigh my ford mx75 gearbox and see how much I can get rid off...

what engine did the gkd have in it ,any idea which bmw clutch plate was fitted , i had a look at the ratios on this e36 box and there the same as a tran x

It was an m42 4 cyl engine/clutch/box from an e36 318is. I have no actual data of the weight but I just remember it feeling particularly light compared to type 9 and also the mx5 box I have in the garage. Maybe Google will get you some weight data.
