modified pinto alternator bracket

Morning all!

dont suppose anyone on here has a spare modified pinto alternator bracket kicking around?

Trial fitted the engine over the weekend and a: the alternator is rather close to the chassis and b: the steering rack doesn't fit underneath it!

I had the same issue when building my MK Indy - the original donor alternator fouled the chassis and steering column.

I used a smaller Nippon Denso alternator and fabricated a mounting bracket from 50x50 angle iron. Used the OEM mounting bracket to get the engine mounting pattern and the OEM belt tensioner to adjust it. Worked perfectly and only cost an hour or so to do.

From memory the OEM Pinto alternator bracket was cast/forged and not easily modified. The alternator itself was also not readily modifiable (lots of space in a Sierra engine bay).

thanks nick will have a look into that. yes i have the original, the big and bulky thing that it is! I've seen made up brackets like the haynes roadster ones but as i don't have any welding equipment its a bit tricky to make one up like that.

Just curious to know how other people have got round it.

Hack sawing 50x50 angle iron might draw a sweat in this weather, but I had the material and smaller alternator to hand.

but as above if you can get much cheaper alternators (little 40A kubota ones were popular at one point - all these little nippon denso ones are very similar) but you's need make your own bracket or find someone to help you

My Dad got me the Nippon Denso alternator and IIRC it was from a Kubota digger (he sells them). Making the mount myself followed my DIY approach to car building.
