Xflow sump change
xxx - 25/4/07 at 09:36 AM

Hi Guys I need to change the sump on my 1300 xflow. I have a new sump and gaskets etc.

It seems that the bell housing on the type9 gearbox covers the last two bolts securing the sump? Does the gearbox need to come off to change it? Just woundered if Im seeing it correctly?

Thanks

Colin

Yup, my sump needs changing (bloody oil leaks) too, only way is to split the engine/gearbox I think...

Can't you get to the rear bolts with one of those wobbly socket extensions?

As far as I remember (I don't wanna go look, cos it's liberally covered in "Mr Fords anti-rust treatment" (oil)) the two rear bolts are impossible to get to without removing the engine from the gearbox.

I'd be REALLY happy to be wrong though

I seem to recall that you can get them out with a lot of fiddling about with different sockets, wobble extensions and spanners - you'll never get them back in though so I'm afraid there's not really any alternative to separating the gearbox.

You can cut the plate between engine and box but it's not worth the hassle

I did manage to remove my sump without removing the engine - but I never want to do it again!

It involved:-

Draining off all the engine fluids
Putting the car on ramps
Lifting the engine with a hoist
Separating the engine and gearbox by a few inches, while keeping everything in line (not easy)
Lying under the car while undoing the sump bolts
Struggling to refit the back 2 sump bolts when I'd finished
Reconnecting the engine and gearbox
Remounting everything
Refilling the engine

In the end, I would have taken half the time if I'd hauled out the engine and gearbox, and probably wouldn't have pulled a muscle in my back!!
