Lightest diff?
lsdweb - 23/1/08 at 09:22 PM

Hi All

I'm slowly (but far faster than I imagined!) pulling my bits together for a new build and trying to find the lightest diff possible. It has to be LSD with a suitable ratio for a car engine

The rear of the chassis hasn't been built yet and I'm probably going DeDion.

I've looked at using a Subaru diff and I'm sure they are bullet proof but they are as heavy as the Sierra unit.

Any thoughts?

Wyn

The BMW diffs are pretty light but I don't know which ones are LSD etc. ANybody know of a reference source for BMW diffs>

According to this site http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/e30.html
Diffs with an LSD have an S or a Z in the part number.

Freelander diff is light but no LSD (unless quaife make one now)

ive got sierra dif and impreza WRX diff in the garage, the r160 is quite long but not unusable, but mounting it is different.

if you want to know how long it is, i can measure it for you if you like.

also..my dad has a freelander, i can measure that as well if you like.

what would a Honda CRV diff weigh?

I don't know what is available in other parts of the world, but I use a Ford Explorer dif. It has an alum. housing, quite light, and easy to find (we picked up a couple pallets of them).

hey Wyn just weighed my MX5 diff which i know is available as an LSD.

it is 50lbs but you could save a lot of that by lopping off the "wings" obviously you would have to support it differently but it could be an option

i have no idea how 50 lbs compares to the sierra LSD i hav back home. i figure the MX5 diff is lighter though

open sierra is over 20kgs, lsd sierra is nearly 30kgs, freelander is open and 14kgs.

While i def agree weight is all, you could argue that the extra weight will be in the right place :-)
(says he driving a CEC with a sierra LSD)
