That's not bad actually, I really like the side profile.

Something wrong with the renderings though, they have completely inverse perspective i.e. things nearer are smaller than the same things further away.

I wonder if that's done on Goggle Sketchup. It has that inverse-perspective bug, plus many others...

It does look like Sketchup. Seems like a fairly major bug!

He's spent some time on that, but it doesn't look like the wishbone mounting section of the front end of the frame is at all well connected to the centre section.

Cheers

You can do it quickly. You can do it cheap. You can do it right. – Pick any two.

Yeah don't get me started on Sketchup... I made the mistake of buying the "pro" version. All the bugs render it little better than the free version. In my opinion, stay with the free version...

Actually I didn't mind the details. But it actually got my attention as a well interpreted mid engine locost concept. Especially regarding the chassis and the body work or the actual lack of it.

The "perspective" looks fine to me! They are isometric views, they look weird because the brain expects to see perspective.

The car looks like an MR2 with cycle wings, which to an X1/9 owner like me is doubly painful.

exactly. i had the same problem with autocad when designing my car, kep the thinking id made the wheels diferent sizes.
the bug is in the brain, not the programme. if you measure the wheels that look different thay are actually the same. as rachaeljf says, it is in isometric so your brain thinks things that are further away look bigger because they should be smaller, but are infact the same size!

ps- i think it is ugly! but for a car made of single plane curves it is not too bad. the problem with most locost style midi's is that they are style around a locost, which is a front engine car, so most designs are doomed from the start and end up too long.

Hi everyone,

Mark Tsui here, the guy who designed this. I was surprised to see this pop up here now, since it has been a while since I posted this up at LocostUSA.com. Here is the original topic I posted there:

http://www.locostusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4777

The full gallery is here:

I used ProE to do the modeling and did a few renders using the Flamingo ad-on to Rhino.

The only pictures that are actually rendered are the pictures where the car is dark blue, so those are the only pictures that actually incorporate perspective to them. The rest are ProE screen shots, which are just isometric without any perspective vanishing point.

Regarding the styling, I set a hard constraint on myself that the body had to be able to be made with single curvature aluminum sheet. I have seen many gorgeous looking renders of curvy home built concepts that either never get started, never get finished, or take years to make a one-off custom fiberglass body. I have no interest in investing the amount of time required for that.

Given this constraint I put on the design, I admit that it is not the nicest looking car, but it is one that I believe can be built fairly easily, requiring no fiberglass work.

Cost and ease of build were the prime objectives for the design, which is why I decided to incorporate the Mac struts from the donor car in the rear, rather than double wishbone.

I also built a Locost, which I completed in 2007. Pics here:

I welcome any feedback, good or bad. Thanks for looking!

Mark

Nice to read you Mark!
What are the length, wight and height of the car?
As I see a lot of effort is gone into the design. Are you planing to make one?

Hi Zen,

Currently, the frame dimensions are 138" long, 54" wide and 26" high.

I am planning on building it at some point and maybe producing some dimensioned frame drawings for it if anyone is interested in building it.

I would have to sell the Locost to fund building it though, and it might be tough for me to see it driving away with a new owner.

Also, my wife and I have a 3 year old and a 3 month old, so my spare time for building cars is few and far between.

In the meantime, maybe I'll work on the model some more, and make drawings for the frame.

Cheers,
Mark

We are all big car enthusiasts with similar problems (lack of time and money).
Have you considered to make it open source? I'm quite sure lot of people would love to help on the design and build the car, myself included

Hey Zen,

I'm not really interested in going the open source route with this car. I've seen a few attempts that end up being too many cooks in the kitchen.

If I ever get around to making drawings for it, I'll make it known.

Mark

LOL
Just don't let it stay only a project in a folder. I think it is a nice locost alternative to the classic Seven.

p.s. Regarding the discussion about the roof and doors on the LocostUSA forum. I suggest you think about some gull wing doors as option.

I'm mildly concerned about having things like shock mounts mid-span on a beam, it seems like bad planning to me? It also looks very long by the side view?

I agree, it was the one comment I was going to make, those mounts, where most of the weight of the car will be present, will want to move towards each other.

Thanks for the feedback. That is definitely a valid concern. The frame has not been finalized yet, and adding another tube with an end where the front upper shock mount is, will be added.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi all,

Time for a very long overdue update! Over the last few years, I have made a significant redesign to my Midix mid-engine sports car that I am planning on building one day. The updated design is largely inspired by the Midlana, but has some major aesthetic differences that I wanted, as well as planned improvements for passenger comfort and weather protection.

I have been putting together content to plan out the build, and I recently decided to turn this content into a website, which I have now launched:

https://midixsportscar.wordpress.com/

The latest CAD renderings are here:

https://midixsportscar.wordpress.com/cad-renderings/

Any feedback is welcome!
