Thanks for the link to the emissions standard, that is really appreciated. It only lists one Mazda MX5 1.6, and strictly speaking mine is a Eunos as it's a Japanese import.

As you say it will depend on the tester on the day, but fingers crossed it'll pass which will be the first target.

eunos is certainly not listed, even using vin references. [lots of info on MX5 fora for MOT requirements] hence: I believe you only have to attain "CO <= 3.5% HC <= 1200ppm"
also note, most ulez etc goes by registration date so you should be fine if you get a 'new' reg no. or even Q. uncertain of what age related might give.

That makes for even more interesting reading, thank you. A google for eunos mot emissions brought up so many people having to deal with less than bright mot testers, but I'm guessing an iva tester is one step up from the average mot person.

And one more note, the 'proof of engine age' letter that I got from Mazda actually says

'Mazda Motors UK Limited is the official representative of the Mazda Motor Corporation of Hiroshima Japan, the manufacturer of the above vehicle'

If that doesn't make it 100% clear I don't think anything can!!

let us be fair here, edge cases of imported cars from a third of a century ago, will never be high on the MOT syllabus.

What are the rules for going to an MOT tester for lights and emmissions before IVA, presumably it would need to be trailered to the MOT garage?

the exemptions only apply for 'mandatory tests' , so no, taking it to a local garage to test emissions must be trailered, [or perhaps trade plates? ]

Thank you, sounds like I need to get the tow vehicle roadworthy before I can get ready for the IVA.

I have to ask, why lights? The only thing that might be easier at an MOT station is headlight beam pattern, everything else should be DIY-able. And even for beam pattern, I did mine against a fence and it ended up spot on for one side, and slightly high (but acceptable) for the other side.

I had hoped that I could go to the local MOT garage pre-IVA, though I suspected it wasn't an option with out a trailer. I was thinking they check aspects like the brake ballance, handbrake strength, dipped beam pattern and emissions to reduce the risk of failure on things that are more dificult to measure at home. I will want it mapped and corner weighted at some point, but was hoping to do this post-IVA so that I wouldn't have to trailer it about as much.

Regarding the beam pattern, my garage floor is really uneven and I live on a hill so the drive is curved in 2 directions. This would make it difficult to get much out of pointing it at the garage door. I may be able to use my neighbour's driveway, but I was thinking that I could move it slightly further and do the other bits at the same time.
